We will be in this part of Wisconsin in the end of May first part of June. Anyone have suggestions as to where to fish in this area. We prefer to fish streams and rivers.

Try the WI DNR website (it may be covered under their GoWild header) and search for maps of Class A streams. That would be a great starting point. Then stop by the local bait shop as they will be very helpful as to what is biting where, and on what presentation. They know you won’t catch them all and will also appreciate your business. The LaCrosse area is a great place to start and somewhat centered in the region.
Good luck.

Well,,,,,,,, right now I'm in Port Isabel, TX. However, I live in S.E. MN., 25 miles from LaCrosse, WI. and I have fished the Driftless Area all of my life. Are you fly fishing, spin fishing or bait fishing? Do you practice C & R. Answer those two questions and then we will go from there.

O. K. flyguy. For us old guyz that are not Familiar with the Driftless Area in The Badger. Does it extend to the east far enough to encompass Stevens Point and the river that runs thru' it? I'll be hanging out there and on south to Mauston for a few days around the 20th of June and I'll be traveling with 6'6" and 9' poles, Jer

If you are going to be in Wisconsin and want to do something really fun......go float down the Apple River. It is so fun. We didn't fish we just floated in innertubes. A few of the tubes had ice chests full of beer etc. At the end of the float is a rapids. You can avoid the rapids or go back through it several times. You buy your shuttle pass and rent the tubes and it was a blast.

We did not fish and I am not sure if anyone does. It was shallow and safe the whole way. You could stand up anytime. All the way down it there is music playing on the riverbanks with cans to throw your empty can into.

BigBarney,
The DA does not quite reach that far, but you don’t miss it by much. The WI River flows through Point (I went to college there) and can provide a huge variety of fish. Mauston is also near the Sconnie, but I’m guessing about 45 minutes S, on the other end of 2 amazing flowages (Petenwell and Castle Rock). Quite a few streams to fish along the way, too. There are only 2900 or so streams to fish in WI, so I like your chances of finding one to keep you busy. Enjoy.

Check out the WI DNR map as they grade the streams in Class 1,2 and 3
Apparently some can’t spell anymore.
You can search Google to view the map of the area, too. South of LaCrosse to Prairie du Chien will provide scenery, some great beer and plenty of fishing opportunities.
Good luck.
You may want to leave your Bears or Cubs gear home, though. 😉

I don't think the Driftless Area will go as far North a Stevens Point, but there is trout up there. The center of the Driftless Area is N. E. Iowa, S.E MN. & Vernon & Crawford Countries in WI.

Go to Driftlessangler.com, that will give you the best area fly shop around. Also, a guide service if wanted. They also have an online fishing report that is usually pretty much on the mark.

The go-to fly for the area is the pink squirrel, size 14 - 18, it's a bead head that is fished like all bead heads and may be purchased at the Driftless Angler Fly Shop in Viroqua, WI. Good fly fishing around there and the Coon Valley area. If you tie flies they used to sell a kit containing all supplies to tye the pink squirrel, I don't know if they do anymore or not. Iowa used to stock rainbows, I know MN. does not and I don't think WI. does either. The water is usually pretty clear, you should use a 5X or 6X tippet. March and April are usually the best months in MN. Any other questions just ask.

You will catch trout around the Mauston area but not out of the Wisc. River, that I have heard about anyway. The Wisc. River is a good walleye river.
