Hello everyone, I live in the beautiful city of Santa Barbara, CA. All of my fishing experience has been off the California coast around the Channel Islands. For the first time this April, I'm going to attempt to fish on the shores and maybe off a boat at June Lake in California. If anyone can give me some tips on gear, bait and lures on catching trout, that would be appreciated. Thanks
Felix H Gomez
Felix, I have been fishing in the Sierras for years. As far as spinning rods go, use a light action rod 6-7 foot with 4 lb test. For bait you can check fishing reports before you go ( on-line or Western Outdoor News). Main go-tos are PowerBait, mice tails or Gulp floating pinched nightcrawlers fished on a Carolina rig. Live night crawlers may be hitting but you can buy those up there. You can fish those with a bobber and a split shot. Lures that have worked well for me are Kastmasters 1/4-1/2 oz, Thomas Buoyant or Panther Martins. That’s a good collection that should do you well. I am sure you will get some other replies too.
Thanks for the info, I will dry your suggestions.
I lived in this area for 24 years. If fishing from shore, I recommend that as you are driving into the June Lake area that you park adjacent to the highway. There are a few areas that you can pull off and then walk down to the lake. I suggest about 1/2 way down to pull off. Using a drop sinker, about 1/8 to 1/4 ounce, go up approximately 2 feet and tie off a number 16 gold treble hook and 2 feet above that another 16 gold treble hook. Make sure that you have approximately 1 foot to 1.5 feet of leader line off your main line for each hook. Using power bait, pink or multi-colored cast about 50 to 75 feet. You should catch your limit.
Thanks for the infomation
what has worked best for me has been 1/8 oz panther martin black with yellow spots also red worms with a number 8 or 10 single hook
Thanks for the info, I will give it try.
Night crawlers ( med size) work great at times. I use a # 8 hook with 3 feet of leader below a slider and once set, I release my bail allowing trout bait without weight. I get inpatient pretty quick though, so I love casting spinners. Silver/chrome in sunlight, gold/brass when its overcast. Kastmaster, bluefox, panther martin and my all time favorite.. Mepps #0 & #1
In over 50 years of living here in the Sierra's , I have caught more trout (river and lake) on this spinner than all the others combined.
Good luck & fish on !
