You sure they're pheasants ?
I remember an illustrated character in a magazine named 'Wicked Wanda'; she ran in upper-
crust circles like royalty,
diplomats, etc. ! One week-end
for her guests' entertainment,
she had her 'police' force round
up a flock of peasants, dress
them in bird costumes, mount them on catapults and toss
them into the air on the edge
of wooded areas for her
guests to shoot at; she called
it 'peasant hunting' ! (Ha !)

My huntin buddy has a little German Shorthair. She's good if we can keep her close, but she has a tendency to get ahead and then lost if cover is to tall. Need to stay in shorter cover I guess. Maybe I'll try to post pics. Fingers crossed.

I used to hunt birds with a buddy who had a black lab and a dalmation. The lab would hunt em up, give a look toward us and lunge at the bird. If we shot it, he would go find it and place his foot on the thing. If it jumped, the dalmation would bite its head and the lab would put his foot back on it. Not the best bird dogs, but we managed. Fun dogs to be with.

You can't say the dalmatian was hard-mouthed if it only bites the pheasant's head off and nothing more. Good luck today Smokey!👍

Good luck! I used to raise pheasants and release them on the local farms. nothing beats the true wild birds like we used to find before the hawks and coyotes moved in, now your lucky to find cottontails. Them pen raised birds are like fishing stocked trout lol not a real thrill except for the dog.

It is cool going out really hunting them. Good dogs are definitely cool to have. I agree it used to be better. Now guys go to a planned hunt. Meaning they are told right where the nimrods will be put. It would be like if fish were in cages in certain parts of a river or lake and then the gate to the cages will be opened when a tournament starts or something after all participants are told to troll right through a certain spot.

My wife ask "did you catch any?" when I go fishin. And usually says " did you get any birds?" when I go bird huntin. But she speaks proper and all, not like me. She don't hunt or fish either. However, she don't usually mind if I do, so we're a pretty good fit I guess.

My grand dad used to raise them there pheasant birds in FtWorth, Texas back in the 1950’s. I used to go out in the pens and watch them mill around. They were great eating too on a Sunday after church. Miss that time very much. Six uncles and three aunts at the dinner table. What fun. One uncle would go fishing and kept what he caught. My mom would fry them up after he cleaned them all. He would really enjoy himself eating them himself.

Best of luck to you sir. Having followed bird dogs around for over thirty years I like shorthairs but I came to believe the Good Lord gave us the Brittany to make up for the shortcomings of all other dogs. The last pair I retired had hunted birds in seven states. I agree about planted birds. They are good for training boys and dogs to hunt but nothing beats wild birds.
