I have the Helix 5 ice. I know lots of ice fishermen love the flasher, however I don't use it. I got a lesson on it from a Vex user. But all you see is a line (the fish) getting close to your lure. You can't tell the size of a fish. I love the sonar screen that can to some degree show a small fish or a bigger one.

Well, I just seen the Utube on A-scope for helix. I guess you can tell size with the flasher. I still don't think I will use it. lol

I bought a Helix 7 and also a Helix 5 (Both side imaging/GPS) for my little bass boat back in Spring of 2016.

Went down and spent over 3 weeks on Okeechobee that Spring. Lake was way up around 16 feet as I recall, had to "lock in" and "lock out" every day which was a pain in the azz.

Some of the best fishing was back in the high reeds and once you get into them, and make a few turns you will have no clue as to which way is which.

These units will keep you straight as to which way you are headed and also it "tracks" where you came from (like a bread crumb trail). You could flounder around in that heavy stuff a long time trying to find a way out without those units.

I got more benefit out of those features than it actually putting me on to where the fish were. Once they are in that heavy stuff, they're not gonna show up well via sonar.

P.S. Be sure when you get your unit to check the software "status" and ensure it is at the latest software level which is certainly should be as the latest update was in the Spring of 2016.

Without that update, you could easily experience another pain in the azz by having to re-start the device after cranking your boat motor.

The unit has a (low voltage indicator) and if the unit senses below 8 or 9 volts (not sure now of what the limit was) but if it sees a voltage lower (which it might while you are cranking the boat engine), it will shut down the device automatically.

Now ya gotta turn it on again and bring back the screen displays you had before.

The latest software update which for the Helix 7 should be (7.780) has a "fix" included that raises the voltage threshold higher so that the above problem does not occur.

The update did help correct the voltage threshold problem. If the unit still turns off when starting the big motor, it's sometimes necessary to running a heavier gauge wire to the battery and unit. The best thing to do is put the unit in Standby when starting the big motor.
