Planning on going to San Juan Puerto Rico next week with a bunch of friends for a bachelor party. My question comes in the form of what can i pack and what can't i pack for traveling going through Delta and TSA. Has anyone here done it before and what advice can you give me? Thank you for any feedback.

I just brought a spinning reel and a Plano box full of tackle (hooks no larger than 1/2-3/4" - my made up guideline FYI) on a domestic flight no problem. If you check your bag you should be able to bring just about anything. I left the rod at home as i dont have a 4 piece and there would be spare rods where i was going. TSA loved the clear plano box i put it in the bin with my tablet, easy for them to see it was harmless and on my way i went.

Perfect I was thinking about the length of the fishing hooks. TSA website says not intimidating or something at that nature regarding hooks.

Won't be a problem in checked bags you can bring it all. In your carry-on you need to be careful that nothing can be considered a weapon which means only small hooks and of course no knives!

I have had a blast taking a little fishing kit all over the world, once I was even able to fish off the balcony of my hotel room (and caught a few dozen decent fish!).

Rods and reels are permitted as checked luggage, and are also allowed as carry-on luggage by T.S.A. ... Make sure you check with your carrier to confirm that they will allow you to bring your rod tube. If they seem hesitant, take a quick moment to explain just how vital this piece of equipment is to your trip.

Can you bring a fishing rod on a plane?

Sharp fishing tackle that may be considered dangerous, such as large fish hooks, should be sheathed, securely wrapped, and packed in your checked bags. Like other high-value objects, you may wish to pack expensive reels or fragile tackle that does not pose a security threat (small flies) in your carry-on bags.

Traveling with Fishing Gear: What To Know Before Your Next Flight:

( "I disagree with this. Just check all sharp items. Taking a box full of large hooks, lures and flies is bound to give you trouble at airport security. They might let you enter the plane in the end, but only after a 30 minute argument with the security officer who’s probably clueless about fishing, and why you need a 3” fishing hook in your carry on luggage." )

If you absolutely must carry your lures with you, write an email to the airline asking about carry-on regulations for fishing lures/flies/hooks. If the response is positive, print it out and be prepared for a talk.

Travel vs. Trolling Rods
4 piece travel rods are great for light fly fishing or small lures, but what if you’re going after something bigger? Ask any serious international angler planning their trip to a coral-filled paradise; they’re going to bring at least two heavy trolling rods for the charter boat (just in case the equipment on board isn’t any good) and another 4 piece travel rod for having fun from the beach.
According to the US Transportation Security Administration, you can take travel rods as carry-on luggage with you. I usually group them together in a short rod tube and haven’t had any trouble so far on local or international flights. To secure the rods additionally, tape them together or pack them in their original packaging so they don’t chafe during the ride too much.

What about heavier equipment like beach-casting or trolling rods? It might be a bit harder to get airport security to agree to let you carry these on the plane. Don’t worry though, you can check them in as sports equipment and most airlines will not charge you an overweight/excess baggage fee. That being said, be sure to check the website of the company you’re flying with about their sports equipment luggage policies.
Tip for checking in rod tubes: Buy a hard-shell tube that supports a padlock or drill two holes into a soft-shell one so you can lock the zipper in place to avoid getting your rods stolen. It’s an unpleasant fact, but baggage theft does happen. Your job is to make the “prize” as hard to get at as possible.

Bottom line check with the Air Lines that you are traveling on for conformation, plus check their web site for the rules and regulations. Print a copy and have it avaable to present if questioned...

I wanted to take a rod tube on a flight to Thailand but with a length of 6 feet they wanted almost as much in extra fees that I left it at home and bought one in Thailand for less than the extra fees. Check with your airline before you go.

I’ve carried my four piece flyrod on many flights, no problem.
