How can you go to states like Montana, Idaho and such, and fish own your own. Seems like you are forcced to use those fishing guides to get to the real backwoods river sites. They are overly priced and all I want to do is fish the Midwest on my own, at least just once before God calls me home.
Just a suggestion, pick a spot, a place where you would like to go. Do some research i.e Fish and Game, maps, fishing reports etc.etc. Ask questions here on the Stage. Contact local tackle shops wherever it is you decide on save your pennies up and just go! Welcome to the forum Brad! Where are you? You can get more specific answers if you could put your location in your profile.
Thank you, that is some awesome suggestions.

Welcome to the Forum, Brad. A lot of fly fishermen on here from all over the country and they will all give you some advice and help you out. We Care! IMHO, Lake Taneycomo in Branson, MO. is one of the best trout fishing areas in the US, and it has free access in most places. I live in the Driftless Area, which is in the Tri-State Area of MN., WI. & Iowa and the best of the 3 state area. Wulffy has Mont. & CO. covered. A lot of ID. guys on here that will help when they wake up, I'm sure. Spirit will give you all kinds of info on N. CA.
Montana is the place I want to come to. So any suggestions you can make would be great. I believe today because of these ideas I'm being giving I will start doing the research and planning. Want it to be my once in life time trip before this summer is up
High mountain lakes check out Cooke City! Rivers, the Big Hole from Wise River to Melrose, the Boulder from Big Timber to the mountains, the Yellowstone almost anywhere from the Park to Big Timber, Rock Creek, the Bitterroot, the Blackfoot, around Missoula. If you are taking family the Cooke City area is awesome.

I love rivers.
Top recommend would be the BigHole. It's awesome. Best time is early September. Lots of public access, Above Melrose, Browns rainbows, cuts and an occasional grayling, below Melrose browns and bows. Also the Wise River above where it joins the Big Hole. Wonderful country, great water, plenty to do for fishing and sight seeing.

Try a little further south around Branson, MO. The fall spawn on brown trout is supposed to give up some large ones.
