Hatch Storage Solutions

I have an Old Town Topwater PDL but I'm sure this problem applies to other kayaks as well.

The front hatch has a pretty large opening and simply allows access to the hull. The problem is that anything small I may want to store up there has a tendency to slide around in the hull and can end up in the very back.

Has anyone come up with solutions to this problem?

I have a sit in so no hull issues like this but... Could you insert some barricade in the hull? Maybe pipe insulation cut lengthwise? The adhesive secures it to the hull making a speed bump for sliding objects. Cheap, flexible, and removable.

I put a piece of flexible foam matting in mine; helps my rods from sliding out of reach during transport. I've also seen people install an eyelet inside the hatch that they can secure a drybag to.

Dry bag? That's what I use with my Crescent Lite Tackle which also has a huge opening, even larger than the Top Water. Using a dry bag keeps things from ending up sliding around too far as you can leave the dry bag somewhat inflated and too big to move too far.

You might be able to use a hatch liner or hatch bucket in there as well which would also ensure things can't slide around, might have to make one but DIY hatch liners directions are out there and worth a look! Might be just what you need. Cheers.

I’ve seen 2 solutions:

One is a mfr product (that you could easily duplicate) that consists of a cloth bag with a rigid ring that fits in the hatch opening. You can remove it in a second to access deeper in the hatch.

The other is a little redneck ingenuity. Just epoxy a peanut butter jar to the underside if the hatch cover. Instant waterproof storage for your keys, phone, etc.

I like “iron40’s” idea 💡 it’s the right price...

I know what you mean and now you got me thinking about my bonafide yak. I generally only put bulk items in my hatch because the center has a drop box for the small stuff. Going to stay tuned to this and see what is suggested while I look at mine.
