I have the right to drive or not drive.. I agree. I just also wonder why so many people special order their brand new cars without turning signals.

Since we are off talking about fishing, I will on occasion for amusement when waiting for my wife shopping or a road trip break, will use the following as an "ice breaker" in chatting with females I might encounter.

First, let me mention that this is Texas, and there are a lot of ladies who wear cowboy boots. On seeing one, I will make the comment, "Mam, I see your roots are showing!" Which I can assure you will get their attention. When they are about to either verbally assault me, or worse, I will then quickly simply point to their boots! I then remark "were you born in Texas?" I am not sure this would work in New Jersey! RJS

Although I grew up in a small
city (pop.<150,000), I have
driven in or through many major cities all along the east coast
from Portland, Me. to Tampa,
Fl. ! Lived less than an hour
from Boston, so have driven
in that city dozens of times for touristing, visiting the science museum or aquarium, concerts
at the 'Garden', etc. ! It is a
horror to drive in, as most
of the roads
are paved-over cowpaths
going all the way back to
the late-1600s, with too many
dead-ends, narrow streets and
one-ways, usually going in the opposite direction from where
you want to go or need to be !
Now I live in Mesa, Az., and
the traffic anywhere within the Phoenix Metro area is
absolutely abominable ! Not
only are the drivers here some
of the very worst I've ever seen, but the commuter traffic jams
are absolutely incredible !
Between 4:00 and 6:30 PM,
the highways become miles-
long, 4, 5, or 6-lane parking lots where you inch along at about
100 feet for every 10 to 15
minutes ! If that isn't bad
enough, the city is worse,
as Phoenix has the dubious
distinction of having the
most red-light running
accidents in the country !
And this past year alone, we
have had 1,175 WRONG-WAY
driving incidents/accidents
on the highway; that many
people have actually driven
AGAINST THE TRAFFIC on
Phoenix highways and caused serious accidents, many of
them deadly ! Seems like no matter where you go/drive in
this country lately, the roads
are clogged with buffoons
driving like freakin' lunatics !
I have been T-boned once
and had several close calls in
the last 5 or 6 years; it's getting so's I don't even get to enjoy it
anymore ! I drive a tank
(figuratively speaking); it's an
'89 Ford Crown Victoria, so it would probably take a major
hit for me to get seriously
injured, but even so, I just don't feel safe anymore !

I don't have to deal with that crap since I moved from San Diego to Lincoln. Sacramento traffic can be rough, but nothing like San Diego, L.A. or the Bay Area. When I left San Diego 20 some years ago the traffic situation was getting really bad. The infrastructure and highway systems were built for a population of about 500,000 and the actual metropolitan population, if you include Tijuana, was probably close to 4 or 5 million. When I got the opportunity to move out, I left. Do I miss it? Yes, I miss the San Diego of the 1970's. But it's gone.

Talk about San Diego traffic. I am from a small town. i finished my enlistment in May 1960. Another guy on my ship also finished in May, but a couple days after me. He said here take my keys and drive my car until I get out. So I am downtown and make a turn onto one of the city streets that is at least 4 lanes wide. So on this new street there weren't any cars on the street and I was driving on it up an incline and at the top of the incline was the stop light and the next intersection. I calmly drive up to the light and there facing me was a row of cars in EVERY lane FACING me! I QUICKLY turned and got the hell out of there. Man that could have turned out BAD!
