I have an ex-wife that would love to tell you how "ludicrous and "wishful thinking", trying to use "supplementing" the family budget as an excuse to go fishing and purchase gear, can be. I have a tale about a guided (half the $$ was for him) fishing trip to the coast for silvers (Coho) that cost me about $250 per pound !
I have agree with the above, you would have to fish daily, travel to get variety, buy a freezer (and pay to use it (electricity), as well as the proper packaging ). You'll lose gear to be replaced, deal with the weather, deal with the "skunk" days....in short, probably become disillusioned and sink into depression...need a therapist you can't afford....and worst of all....end up no longer ENJOYING FISHING, BECAUSE IT IS NOW A JOB. That... would be the tragedy.
Don't know what you do as a vocation, but if you are fishing for economics, I'd concentrate on getting a raise, or further your education for a better job.
If , on the other hand, you are wanting to do this for the "back-to-basics survivalist" reasoning, you will probably go to bed hungry occasionally.
I think your initial statement about "wanting a hobby that....." kinda was the first mis-step. What man ever had a "hobby" that didn't take having "disposable income" ? Have yet to meet that guy.
Sorry, the short answer is...no.

The only way to get enough fish to survive on is to poach with a net and sell the fish but you risk spending years in jail not to mention the destruction to the ecosystem!

All these answers are pretty right on. However, after spending years fo fishing and thousands of dollars on gear, including bass boat, I can catch enough fish once a week at my home lake to live off of fish alone. Would I, no. For one, I don't like the taste of fish that much, I prefer beef, as in steak. Two, I don't think eating fish every day, 7 days a week would be good for you. And third how long would you be able to stand it even if you did like the taste of fish? If you added up all the money I've spent on all the gear and all the money you spend EVERY time you go out, you could buy a lot of groceries for that amount of money for years to come before you could see any savings I would think. Fish whenever you can/want to.
Keep the eatin sized fish, release the little ones and BIG ones and have fun. I think that would be the best bet. In all my years I haven't found that place where I can legally catch and keep beef for free. Darn.

First check the water tests to see if you have any consumption limits. I hunted and fished every year for the past 20 years since I retired if you do your homework and learn the right way to do it, you can definitely do it. Between my son grandson and I we killed 3 whitetail and 2 elk and 3 will pigs. Needless to say we are not buying any meat from the store. Also I fish once or twice a week, between catfish, striped bass and white bass I bring home an average of15 pounds of fish filet so it is doable, the secret is talk to the old timers that have been doing it in your area for a long time pick their brains, find the right spots, and the right bait it will pay off. Also buy one of them machines that vacuum seals your meat or fish in a plastic bag your stuff will last a lot longer. Do not get discouraged, match the hatch and keep on fishing good luck

When you were born, you were granted several inalienable rights automatically given to you by God. One of which is that you have Gods permission to harvest a few of his fish from His waters that He created, in order to feed yourself. The Founders of this country covered this when they mentioned life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To fish to fill your belly would fall under “life.”
Also, as a taxpayer, “state” waters are also your waters. We are smart enough to not litter or take more than we need.
Freshwater fishing licenses are one of the biggest scams around.

Unless you are talking about Alaskan natives, all states require a hunt and fish license to take game. And IDK if you have to have one in Alaska if you are a subsistence fisherman or not. But as for the rest of us you have to have a license. Why do you feel you are entitled to take fish and game without one. I presently live in California and maybe they shouldn't cost as much as they do for most folks, but you should still have to have a license. You have to drive a car usually to get to your job to make money to sustain your existence, but you still need a drivers license to drive. Come on brother, get real. They have been requiring licenses since the early days way should it be different for you?

They may be a scam for you but for the people that actually know what the proceeds from the license is used for, like educating the public, restocking waters that have been depleted of fish by illegal fishing, conservation so our grand kids and their kids could enjoy what you and others like you enjoy legally or not today is worth. So before you criticize what others are doing to preserve and coserve our natural resources think. What are you doing to preserve the future for your kids and their kids besides what's convenient for you. Have a great life.

I gotta say Frankie, that is one selfish, self-centered point of view. We have to share this planet with about 8 billion other people. Now we can either take the attitude what can I do to make that as pleasant as possible for all of us? or F everybody else, I'm gonna get mine and you can all go piss up a rope.

Utah does have elk , mule deer, turkey. There is great fishing near Provo. Deer Creek and Jordanelle, and of course the “Berry”. All the above big game are on a draw basis and you would be one of the elite if you drew every year. And at a 20% harvest rate you might be a bit hungry!!

The wild hog population is huge and growing. Don't know if they are in Utah, but the South border states are loaded, there is no limit and season is open year round. Best hunting is at night, and night equipment is expensive. I have no doubt that one could supply family meat needs that way.

When I was a kid we never bought meat. We hunted and fished in seasons and got enough meat to feed us for a year. That said, those days are long gone.

I think it would be smarter to spend the time working for a job that paid enough to more than buy the meats.

I like fishing and hunting a lot but I'd hate to eat that much fish. Deer and Elk are another matter.
