To answer your question about the KY-38 thing - what's a KY-38? I thought the 77 put out a little more power than the 25, but I could definitely be wrong. Man, that was 45 years ago. I was an E-6 and I really didn't work on a whole lot of anything except paper work and making sure everything was moving in and out of the shop as it ought to. You know how that goes.

The KY-38 was an encryption module. It enabled operators to transmit & receive in clear text.
When I did comms for the SEALs in the mid 80's the encryption was contained in the radio itself, and they were using pulsed modulation so they could send an encrypted message in about a microsecond pulse. No time to triangulate and lock in on the location. Pretty slick.
