a small drainage is right outside my work parking area. I fish it sometimes at lunch. Went out today w/ a trout magnet got 2 hits , no catches, but then noticed company. I feel like I know our local snakes pretty good , and from the thickness compared to length ,pretty sure its a moccassin.

I'd say it looks like one but I can't enlarge it on my comp. so can't say for sure.
In the same boat. The picture is too small...but...what I see makes me say Cottonmouth...but...maybe not.
BankStalker: Well, the mantra in Texas is a dead snake is a good snake. I dont know what your regulations are, whether you are inside a city and bound by their ordinances, or not. But the best cure for water moccassins, copper heads, and rattle snakes is a .22 long rifle. Perfect range for a pistol!
Now that I've past three score and ten, I do give reprieve to king and black snakes as well as harmless grass snakes. However, I don't care what kind of "do-gooder" regulations, if it is venomous, I will kill it!RJS
If I killed every rattlesnake I saw while I'm out fishing I wouldn't get any fishing done. My rule - you don't mess with me and I won't mess with you. Ya just gotta be aware that they're out there and be careful. And that looks like a cottonmouth to me. What else could it be?

I dont subscribe to that. W only have 3 to worry about and they are pretty recognizable. What we have the most of in my area in copper heads. Ive killed 4 in one night camping, when Id gone in and out of my site at night. Killed a few moccassins with a walking stick more copperheads. Ive never seen a rattler in the wild, I would like to and get his rattle. I usually just leave them alone as Ive gotten older. Used to look for them and chop em lol, after hitting with a stick lol Doing that at night one time , I had a guy come close saying we were in "their" territory. And I should leave them alone. Then he evidently saw my shadow outline w/ machete in hand , he said good night no harm meant , it was funny. Up at Cold Springs , nope double lake sorry
Brown water snake is almost identical. They are here but no cottonmouth in DE that I'm aware of.

If it's out in the middle of nowhere so as not to be around people much, I try to leave them alone. If it's at a place where someone else is likely to come in contact with it, specially kids, then I would prolly kill it.
I am with R J S, " a dead snake is a good snake " die sucker.

I don't kill snakes or anything on purpose
In my opinion most people don’t know how to handle a snake 🐍 properly. Most won’t cause you trouble if you leave them alone. Many try to harass them and then they become a problem. It’s best to be afraid of them and leave the area.

I confess that in my day, I killed Jim Beam a few times.
