I'm in the Willamette zone, I've been fishing all week and have not been able to fish anything out. I just got into fishing and I'm thinking that I am doing something wrong, any advice or tips.

Go for stocked trout. I'm in Portland and it's been pretty slow with the colder temps

Thanks, where would you go for Trout, would you hit a river or a stocked pond or lake? Again I appreciate it, as I said I'm new to this.

A great resource from the ODFW on where to go and what to fish for. They have a ton of tips too.

Where are you fishing and what are you fishing for?

You could probably catch some Small mouth bass in the little pools next to the Columbia River East of Portland this time of year. Get ready and read up on Channel Cat fishing in the John Day River. It will turn on. If your experienced fisherman .... winter steelhead are fun and they are right now. If you find some different sources of information you should find different fish to chase ALL YEAR around. If you go to Sportsmans Warehouse they have a chart on the wall in the entrance area ( 82nd and Johnson Creek area ) the chart shows what river or location and what bait etc.

That's cause it's rainin in Oregon and you can't catch fish in the rain cause they're hidin under the rocks so they don't get wet.

I used to live in Astoria (in California now) and you could go any direction to catch fish. The Columbian River was great for salmon and sturgen but they are so ugly lol but you need a boat. Big creek was good for steelhead and trout. They loved Oregon crawlers which were as big as pythons they will even "hisss" at you lol.

Saw1.... didn't you read that post that said .."if we don't go fishing in the rain in the winter months in Oregon......we don't get to fish ! Aaah....buck up...buy some polarfleece !

Re: new angler...yeah...our rivers have been underwhelming for too damn long, huh ? And I'm down at the other end of the state. I suggest you catch the show on NBCSportsNW !(426 on my Charter cable ?) with a guy named Owin Hayes, called "Outdoor GPS", Thur & Fri @7pm, Sat & Sun@ 8am.....killer tips, river conditions, guest guides, funny and knowledgeable host...I have been watching fishing shows since "Harold Ensley - The Sportsman's Friend"...WIBW ..CBS affiliate in Topeka, Ks. in the late 50's-60's.. anybody remember him ?....this GPS guy is the best I have seen.....and though I don't fish for bass, I would love a day on the water with Bill Dance !
Seriously, check with FishField or Fisherman's to see what's up and where. Keeping in mind that conditions are gonna change daily this time of year and... sorry...Owin(GPS guy) says WEEKLY that the "Clack ain't back.... just yet". Maybe you gonna have to drive. Good luck !

I got polarfleece, waders, gore tex hats, gloves ,coats and rain jacket and bibs. And if I come to Oregon I'll bring it all. Down here, I'll just wait till tomorrow if it's rainin today. No problem. Much more fun to fish in the sun. Warmer and drier too. It's just no fun when your wet and miserable. And when it's rainin and you're out in it I don't care how much and what you put on if you stay out as long as I do when I'm out you gonna get wet eventually, and that's NO FUN. If you 're not havin fun doin what you're doin, go do something else. That's my motto .

I concur with the "FUN" thing, completely. Don't want to be a total smartass, but if you OWN all the right stuff, as you list above, and you're still getting wet, it either isn't the correct size or you're wearing it incorrectly.
I do usually take an extra pair of gloves and maybe an alternate hat choice (like earflaps or a broad brim).
It's okay, come visit when you can. We'll save a few fish for ya !

I have both fished and hunted in the rain and after 5+ hours of rain, you gonna be wet. And if you're not, it's not what I call rain. It might be misting or something, but not rain. The last time I went fishing in the rain we had 6+ inches of water in the bottom of the boat. (no bilge pump) and both my partner and I were soaked. We caught fish all day but at the end of about 8 hrs. Everything was soaked. I was 15 years younger then. Haven't cared for a repeat. Duck huntin is the same. You stay out there long enough , you're wet. No way around it.

Well now, I guess I am supposed to factor in severity of the storm or rainfall rate ?? Naaah, ...I'll stick with my previous assumption, it don't fit right or you ain't "tuckin' and coverin'" properly. I can say with compunction, I have been out in the rain for FAR longer than 5 hours and remained dry. Perhaps I have the added benefits of:
having worked in construction for years, been a Boy Scout whose troop NEVER cancelled an overnight campout because of weather, being a skier, being totally OCD when picking what to wear, each and every occasion and back to my Boy Scout past.....BE PREPARED !!!!
Again, no "shade" intended, the fish and I will be here all year, no reservations !

Sounds like you got it "covered". Tight lines and stay dry.

Agreed I have suburb rain gear but no matter what 5 hours of heavy rain and it’s done it can only take so much. That being said have had some phenomenal fishing in those few hours!
