I cried over a fish today

It’s yellowfin season where I am and have been avidly searching for them. Today I came across a few birds searching for bait as I was trolling. A few minutes late got a big strike. After 3 hours of battling this 150lbs fish on 30lbs line about 10ft from the boat the line breaks. I was truly heartbroken seeing that fish swim down to the depths with my gear. I really did cry. Thoughts on adding like 25ft of 80lbs as a leader to just manhandle the thing into the boat?

Why not run 80lb mainline with a 40lb leader ? Not being an smartass or anything just a suggestion , People use heavier line than you for way smaller fish including me. Sucks about what happened bro we all have that one that got away, chin up

Well I switch out the setups with 30lb to 60lb and the same thing happened actually twice. We run steal leaders cause we mainly do trolling. When they get close is when the line breaks. I’m assuming cause there’s no stretch it’s all just tension. That’s why I’m thinking just through on like 25ft of 80lb

If you do you that you gotta make sure that you have a higher poundage mainline otherwise the break will occur at the reel which will not be fun. use leader then 80lb then 100lb

Sorry about your loss. Must truly be a really gutting experience to be so close and have it break off.

Is it common to troll with 30lb main/80lb leader? Don’t know much about trolling but when we jig for tuna normally we use a minimum of 40-60lb with leader 80-100lb if we are targeting that size of tuna.

So I had it (mainline tied to swivel on steel leader) it was breaking just on the mainline. Just too much tension and no stretch of the line cause it was a short distance
