Where To Fish And What To Use:

EDITOR'S NOTE: Anthony Randazzo works as a guide for Paradise Plus Guide Service. For more information on fishing the Mississippi Delta, write to 201 Bergeron Drive, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call Anthony Randazzo at (504) 656-9940.

QUESTION: Where do you fish for speckled trout and redfish?

ANSWER: I fish the entire Mississippi Delta, from Empire to Venice.

QUESTION: Where are we fishing now?

ANSWER: We're fishing the coastal bays that surround the Delta on the west side of the river. Because of the falling tide, the coastal bays have high salinity compared to what they typically would have in the summer. So, we're fishing closer to shore than we would in other seasons. We're fishing more of a late-summer pattern than a summer pattern.

ANSWER: We're fishing an underwater island situated in a bay about 6 feet deep. Cane covers the island, and the top of the island is about 2 feet deep and drops off to about 6 feet.

QUESTION: With what do you fish this area for trout and reds?

ANSWER: I fish with an assortment of plastics and crankbaits from PRADCO. We're using the Croaker Tail and Beavertail by Riverside; and the Excalibur Super Spook, Jr., the Excalibur Swim'N Image and the Bomber Long A shallow-diving crankbaits. The Swim'N Image crankbaits look like goldfish, and I believe the PRADCO catalog calls the color sardine.

ANSWER: I fish with a slow, steady retrieve, just enough to keep the bait from remaining on the shallow water.
