Talking about grip, it seems that there is not much practical difference besides what works best for me, right? :)
But I am studying casts and thing become a little bit confusing. I am especially confused about roll cast, snake roll, tower and pile casts.
When should I use them? What are the biggest advantages?
Thank you!

A roll cast is for when you have no room to get line aerial, a tuck cast is to drive nymphs deep, snake cast is to put slack onto the water to get a drag free drift

Grip you generally want to have your thumb aligned with the back of the rod. Gives more strength to the grip and prevents your wrist from breaking too much.

Theres a video, or instructional video on Vimeo (You have to pay for it) but it has tons of good info, called "Mastering the short game." Its worth watching to help you understand the casts you need to use, especially in shorter distances.

Now you know the rest of the story...
I use a roll cast mainly with spinner baits to cast around and under piers and low hanging tree limbs (bushes). This is a one handed cast with a shorter rod for me. Any other cast I use 2 hands to help control the rod and for distance using a longer rod .
BillyBird.. you use spinner baits with a FLY ROD ? REALLY ?
I have seen some 3"-4" articulated bunny-leech flies with a very tiny propeller on the front, but that's about as close to "spinner baits" I've seen in the fly section.....and that was at Dick's.... not exactly Mecca of the fly world and not particularly local waters-aware, anyway.
Please share what size and configuration of spinner baits (Mepps, Panther Martins, rooster tails ?) you might be using....kinda curious as to the rod lengths you mentioned, as well what size tippet are you using to accomplish a roll cast with that amount of bulk on the end. Obviously not going to need to be concerned about having a WF line or a shooting head to get it there, huh ?
So.... I believe the topic of casting was directed at fly fishing, right ?
I kinda like it when the "chime in" is pertinent to the topic, thanks.
I was wondering how you were getting a "roll cast" out of spinner bait.... TWO entirely methods of fishing, ....line, lures, rod, reel...all, nowhere near alike enough to be in the same conversation. 'nuff said.
Sorry didn't see anything about a flyrod. I guess you learn whatever you want from some else and I'll stay out of your conversation since it's nowhere alike enough to be in you conservation. Next time be more specific on your statement. How's that work for you.
