I am in Hilton Head South Carolina for a couple months. Have never fished in this kind of area before and am wondering what to use for bait when fishing off of piers. Also how heavy rod should I be using? Looks like there is some freshwater ponds that might hold bass. Might try some of them. ThNks for all advice

Charles C . Haigh, Jr., Fishing Pier – Public fishing pier in Hilton Head Island:

Hilton Head Island, SC, Highway SC 278
at Pinckney Island. Beaufort County Public Works. (843)255-2800. On Mckay Creek and Intracoastal Waterway. Parking. No fee. Open year round.
The Charles C. Haigh Jr. Fishing Pier is one of the best Hilton Head Island fishing spots open-year round for saltwater fishing. There is a parking lot nearby and no fee to fish!

Fishing piers in Hilton Head?

Yes, a fishing license is required for all fishing. I understand Wal-mart has everything you need.
If you are staying in a gated community the lakes and lagoons may be considered private and a license might not be necessary. Ask the security folks or front desk.
There is a boat landing and a dock on Helmsman Way directly underneath the Cross Island Pkwy next to Palmetto Bay Marina. I see people fishing there all the time.
When you are arriving on HHI by car, notice the island between the two bridges when you cross over from the mainland. This is Pinckney Island and there is a pier on the west side of 278.
There is also Old House Creek fishing park

Here's a list of fishing piers in the area:

The closest ocean fishing pier is on Tybee Island.
I'm not a fisherman by any stretch of the imagination so I can't help you determine what is considered "good"!
Good luck and report back after your trip

There is a park with a pond very near the bridge from the mainland. When we visited a couple of years ago I enjoyed catching some nice Bass. That was in late March- early April, though. Don’t know if they’ll bite now. Careful of the gators though; one ate a pound and a half Bass as I slid it onto the bank.

Check on the piers, you may not need a lic on them. You will hopefully need a solid med/h rod for hopefully a 10-20LB and above fish from the pier. You will need a pier net or grappling Hook to get the bigger fish up to you. Others there may well have them to help you bring them up. You never know in Salt water how big a fish will bite. LOL Again check on the piers, most of them charge you for the use of the peir and it includes your lic. Ask them. If your fishing from Shore, you will need a License. Head Boats you are covered, no lic needed, 99% of the time. If a personal boat, he either has to have a sticker for the people on the boat, 3-5 in maryland or you need a lic yourself. Good Luck and have fun.

Once again I am in awe of the wealth of information you are able to relate and the incredibly clear, concise and well-spoken way that you do it. And you DO fish right?
