Looking for an ID for this panfish caught on a canal connected to Crystal River Fl
It has some sharp teeth, and hit a nightcrawler on the bottom. We've caught a couple so far - largest about 8".

Mangrove Snapper. A saltwater fish, not a freshwater panfish. You can't be more than a half mile from the ocean in the crystal rover

FYI- Minimum size limit is 10". 10 fish bag limit per person. Keep slaying them!
Edit: 10 "snapper" aggregate limit. Only 5 can be mangroves

You are absolutely correct. Should have clarified the 10 snapper aggregate, 5 greys

Don't keep fish you can't ID. There are rules and regulations for a reason.
That fish looks undersized and keeping it was probably illegal.

Fish and Wildlife Officer could of told you what type it is. You would of learned how long it needed to be too... all at once. I’m surprised you synopses doesn’t have pictures for identity of species.
Nice fish did you eat it?
Up in the rivers they get really dark bellys and the teeth give them away. Mango
