Caught a sale over the holidays and got the Lifetime Tamarack Angler 10 footer from Walmart for real cheap. I know it doesn't exactly hold a candle to some of the rigs I've seen on here but for the price I thought why the hell not?

I've kayaked before but never fished from one, so I was wondering if you guys had any tips/tricks/advice for someone who's never done it before? Or any suggestions on additional items I should consider purchasing to enhance the experience?

Thanks in advance!

Bought my son one last year and he loves it. Best thing I think was the cheap $5 seat cushion along with the scupper plugs, in that Tamarak your ass will get soggy without em.

- Keep it simple

- Always wear a PFD

As you fish more you'll find what works for you.

Lash your gear down. Accidents happen, you don't want all your gear sitting on the bottom when they do.

ESPECIALLY on a small, light kayak like that ALWAYS wear a PFD. If you need to spend the money on a nicer one to get yourself to actually wear it, then spend the money.

Also anything that doesn’t float id recommend attaching to your kayak somehow

I would recommend the YakAttack RotoGrip paddle holder. I've only taken my kayak out once but that thing came in really hand and I'm glad I bought it. Keeps your paddle out of the way and secure so you don't have to worry about it as much when fishing. Also like everyone else is saying always wear a PFD.

You can make a paddle holder from pvc pipe. Get a stadium seat. Milk crate. Something to keep your phone safe (tether it to the kayak). Practice standing. Warm up/Stretch out before you start paddling. There’s so many things.

I am super new to kayak fishing (doing it for about 3 months or so thus far from my hobie passport 10.5') so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. I would say my essential items (aside from a PFD), are a dry bag, a whistle (required by law in FL), a small handheld bilge pump (just in case), and a seat cushion. The less gear you take, the better.

Make sure the seat is comfortable. Always assume youre going to tip; I usually tie up my rods just incase. Likewise, croakies to keep your sunglasses from falling in. A paddle holder if it doesnt already have one, often you need both hands fishing.

You might consider adding accessories at some point. Whatever scraps you have leftover—KEEP THEM—and use them for repairs in the future. Basically, the only thing that will stick to your kayak is that specific type of plastic alone. Teaching yourself how to plastic weld might be the most valuable skill you can learn because it will save you a lot of money in the future!

Before you load up that new yak with fishing gear go for a spin without. In shallow water go

Learn how to stand and simulate casting.

Shift your weight while standing and rock that yak to the point you know what it will handle.

When sitting reach left and right like you are netting a fish and insure the sides do not take on water.

When you are comfortable with what you have learned, load up your gear and do some practice cast before getting to your fishing spot.

Current is pushy, it will take you places you don't want to go. Your paddle can be used as a brace to help stabilize your yak, if you lean to far on way lay the paddle flat on the water and push down it will push you back up. A waterproof box or bag to keep important stuff dry. a small anchor is nice but learn how to use it before you load your boat.

I fish from my kayak on a river so there is always a current -I keep a rope to tie up to a tree off the bank to keep from drifting off or use a small anchor.
