Advice on a bait caster

I’m looking for a reel to go with my new St. Croix Mojo MJC68MHF2. I’ve narrowed it down to a Daiwa Tatula CT, Shimano SLX, or an Abu Garcia Revo X. Targeting Rainbow Bass and Machacha.

My personal choice is the Daiwa TATULA CT...

I would go with the Shimano or Daiwa Tatula and I have both but I would give Shimano a full star more for quality but both are good.

I am only familiar with the Shimano reels but in my opinion one should look for modern casting reels that have internal adjustments to control the speed of the spool in casting. If you have properly balanced the lure weight to line and proper rod, the only remaining factor is having an educated thumb to control the cast. The internal balancing with tiny small plastic balances inside the Shimano help you control this speed problem. These reels cost more but in my opinion they are worth the cost. RJS

Thanks. Very helpful. I have several AG round reels that I used for salmon in Alaska. Bass (Rainbow) fishing will be new. It’s been 50+ years since I fished for LMB in CA so am anxious to give it a go.

Go get em! When I was younger, we would fish even in the coldest weather in Texas. Sometimes when a blue norther would blow in, we would still want to fish, and would take the gas line off the outboard, drain some gas into an open can that we had fill about 1/3 full of sand, the light it just to stay warm. I know you guys up north go out and break the ice and fish that way, but we never get that cold, I don't know just how long I could take that kind of temperature!

No problem with cold here in Costa Rica. Actually we’re going into the dry season. I’ll be fishing in Lake Arenal.
Any thoughts on a bait caster for my new rod?

Gripnripod: I haven't bought a rod for myself in 20 years, and the last one was a custom made graphite rod for bait casting, I think it was 6 1/2 and had a fast tip. Since then the only rods were for grand kids and others I would take fishing in Galveston Bay. As to reels, I am partial to Shimano. They are expensive but are state of the art as for as I know.

I have fished in Costa Rica once, We flew in a "puddle jumper" over to the Caribbean side to fish for tarpon in the mouth and off shore of the Colorado River. Had a wonderful time. Caught my first snook and first barracuda off shore. I caught several tarpon, one which I had foul hooked in the back took me over a hour to wear down and get the hook removed. Great trip! You are lucky to live in such a tropical paradise! RJS

Thanks for the feedback. I did indeed select the Shimano.
I agree, we are blessed to live in Costa Rica. Haven’t fished the Caribbean yet. It’s definitely on the bucket list.
