it's a long shot but i want to try for Burbot in the missouri river in the great falls montana area and was wondering if anyone can give me a few hints on bait, set-ups, and approx. location of where to find them, i caught one this last summer that was just a tad over 33 inches and was really surprised on how good it was.
In Montana, you are going to be a really long cast..... like literally 800+ miles !....from a ling cod. Were you gonna compare the taste of the two ?

Edit: just googled burbot...my bad... they ARE colloquially called freshwater ling ! Learnin' never quits, huh ? Looks like plenty of meals from the biggies.
Where were you when you caught that 33 incher?

I hear they call them "poor man's lobster". Good eating huh?

very good ,, probably the best fresh water fish i have eaten,,,except for cold water trout caught in a high mountain lake cooked in foil with a little salt and bacon grease !!
We catch them in Wisconsin on the Winnebago chain. Most are caught on minnows fished just off the bottom. They spawn here in January and mostly caught in areas with a rocky bottom reef. They are good boiled and then broiled and served with melted butter. They are much like cod or poor man's lobster.

I know in the lake that has them here, they say to fish them at night with glow tubes cutterbugs or grubs with a chunk of sucker meat at or right off the bottom. I’m planning on a trip to catch some through the ice this winter.
