I've always felt that I've got better action and less fouling from using a split ring. If I do not have a split ring, I will tie a loop knot to give the lure a better action.

I never use split rings. Only ever use a loop knot to the lure eye.

I feel like especially the little crankbaits that do not have a lot of 'strength' in their movement would profit from that getting some more freedom. I think you don't need split rings on bigger or even medium baits.

Oval splits seem not to foul as much. I tie the loops on all after removing the splits.
