My dad and I have been fishing for years. However we have always used stuff that "bang for your buck" equipment. However this year for Christmas I want to surprise him with a high end spinning rod. We mostly fish walleye and pike in and around northern Lake Ontario. I'm looking to spend 250$ CAD but my budget is flexible. Thank you and happy holidays!

I personally really like St. Croix. Many people here also recommend Dobyns.
I’d say St Croix’s Walleye or Pike series Premeier rods could be sufficient, but if you want a higher end rod, their Avid series (more expensive) and Legend series (most expensive) are super solid. I currently use premiers for all my outfits, but I have an AvidX on the way that I’m excited to try out.
If you know the power and action you need, check out their website and browse through the models. Any fish specifics series rod will better suited to that type of fish/angling, or at least that’s the idea behind the rod. Look up reviews for any specific models through multiple different websites.

I have a St Croix Legend Tournament Bass spinning rod that I dearly love that would work for multiple walleye techniques. I'm also a huge fan of their Legend Glass line ( I've got 4 of them ) for crankbaits and chatter baits. I'd love to have the spinnerbait version for Shad Raps. If you keep an eye out, you can sometimes find killer deals on them. I bought my 2nd LG Glass for 50% off thru Cabella's/Bass Pro after Christmas last year. In fact I think all the crankbait rods were on sale then. Cashion also makes some nice rods as well.

St. Croixs are great rods with a really good warranty. But I think they're tip heavy and heavy in general.
For $250 (tax-in), I would look at the Daiwa Tatula Bass rod at Cabelas.ca 7' 2" MH should fit the bill. If you're going to go with St. Croix, the Premier or Mojo Bass would be great options. Shimano makes great rods as well, the Zodias is a bit out of your range but the new Shimano Intenza would be a step up from the SLX. If you go the Dobyns route get a Sierra 704sf or 705sf.

St. Croix Avid series. I love mine. Bought it for my wife several years ago as a gift but she never got into fishing. It's too nice to not fish with.
My best rods are St. Croix. I would still like to buy one of their panfish rods.
If I were gifting a spendy rod, I would explore Wraptor.org. --incredible custom rods, made to your liking, not to mention gorgeous.
My 1st. choice is a Daiwa Steez Spin Rod 6'8" Med Lt/Fast Action...
