After watching some snakehead YouTube and how good the fish tastes , I am interesting in trying them. My questions are: 1) Any of you catch them regular? 2) You like the taste?, and 3) How far south can I find them in numbers now? I hear that FL has a strain.. but not clear on that. Any info will be collected and used. Thanks!

Thanks Plum! Got sum questions fer sure. Wondering what they "do" for winter... I understand they can survive in mud and also out of water for three days! On channel reported that a fella took over 80 in one haul and that was an area less than 1/10 acre! And these then took another 5. That was in Maryland! North Carolina states to kill them and or freeze em and send them to DNR for research. I want to eat the first one <grin>
BTW BB .. the channel showed one dinner who didn't like eating fish turn head over heels over the taste. Reported that it's not a fishy taste ….

I am in MD, but I have not caught any. I know others have around here. Can’t speak to the taste, since I never tried one yet. Would like to try one some time. Just watch their teeth. They will bite you.

I heard on this one outdoor show that in Florida, they're a "pest" and harm to the local enviroment, so catch and kill unlimited is what they said.

You know, now that im thinking about florida.......that state has quite a few problems with unwanted wildlife, doesnt it? Like snakeheads....pythons....that one type of monkey........Cant say if that balances out the no-tax benefit.Or having to keep an eye out on your pets or small kids in the yard with alligators , too. Sorry if im painting a bleak outlook on Florida.

Snakehead fishing best lure is frog that I throw to land and drag back into water. They spook really easy. I've caught one a chatterbait one time by accident. They have a better fight than large mouth bass. They try to speed away and try to get into areas that have a lot of cover. Went to a tournament in southern maryland back in May and loved it. That is what got me started. I didnt catch anything but enjoyed the whole program. They had a section for beginner's. Then at the end they had a snakehead fry. Some of the best tasting fish ive had. Just about anywhere here in maryland waters have them. According to the program they are from maine to Florida and spreading west at a moderate rate. Here you are suppose to catch and kill. The largest ive personally caught is about 14 inches. Nothing to set the world on fire.

I hear they are fun to catch good to eat but they could be a problem for the eco system.

Any taken in winter? Through ice? You all making it worth a trip north and give it a work out. Keep us posted when a "tournament" is set. Rob M verifies what I have been watching on YouTube. I can't find where anybody is catching them in numbers here in North Carolina. DNR just says on their online URL to freeze them and send them to them. Maybe they have a large fish fry … ? <grin>

I use to live in Fredericksburg Va, but now live in NC. I have caught numerous snakeheads and my son has caught one over 13lbs. They will strike about anything that you would catch a Bass on. Very aggressive fighter, way more fun to catch than a Bass and are delicious. If you get chance to fish the Potomac River you can catch them in the grass flats and Lilly pads. Be sure to have heavy equipment and braided line. They taste like a striper but a little more firm. They tend to like noisy baits.

In Wisconsin we call those Lawyers or Eel Pout. A member of the cod fish if I recall.
They are very good eating with a firm white meat but a bit challenging to clean.

They were originally brought over from southeast Asia by immigrants who wanted a taste of home. Unsure how they got loose, but they appear to be thriving in many locales.
