Rod or Reel Upgrade?
Hello, looking to upgrade either my dad's fly reel or rod this coming holiday season. I wish I could buy him both, but I can only afford one at the moment. We mostly fly fish for trout on tailwaters in Northeast TN. He currently has a Bass Pro 3 weight rod (can't remember specific model) with a Reddington 3/4 weight rise reel. For reel upgrades I am considering the Ovris Clearwater Cassete or the Hydros (which is on sale right now). For rod upgrades, possibly either the Redington Path or Classic Trout. Any thoughts on which piece of equipment is better to upgrade?

Rod, it's far more important. Plus the Redington rise is already a nice reel.

That’ll be a great gift! I’d say upgrade the rod first - the Classic Trout is a good choice. The current reel will be perfectly suitable for a long time, and it never hurts to have the old rod in the truck in case of an accidental breakage.

Classic trout all the way. you already have a solid reel.

Rod. Those Redington reels are ok. I have the same one. If you have the scratch check out an Echo 3 wt. rod. Great little stream rod for less than $200.

How much you looking to spend on the rod, as others stated that redington rise is a good reel and no need to up grade it

I have never seen a fly reel wear out or break down, they last forever. I think I still have my old Pflueger from 70 years ago, somewhere. Upgrade the rod.
Unless you're bottom fishing mid-ocean, always upgrade the rod first.
As a guy who was a Fly fisherman, rod builder and owned Clemens said to me once, "the fly reel is just a line holder". so put the emphases on the rod first.
