Hand sand with 120 grit polish with 400 grit do save the cork dust to mix with wood glue as sanding may reveal covered up pits and pull out any factory cork filler

Try fine,120-150,very fine 300-320 grit sand paper and slowly twist your hand around the grip. It worked for me on a couple rods. Good luck.

What I do is wrap the top end of that rod section with duct tape and insert it into my cordless drill. I lay the drill flat on the table and pull the trigger with one hand and hold the sand paper against the cork as it spins. It works like a charm. You might want to wrap the blank just above the grip with tape as well to protect it while sanding it. Also if you lay a towel under all of it the rod will spin easier.

I like to start with 220 grit, and then refine with 600 and 800 grit. It's slower than what you've been recommended, but you can create micro-pits in the cork with anything coarser. Plus, it's amazing how smooth you get with 800 grit finishing. It makes crappy cork so much better, and really good cork is fantastic.

Any of the above methods may work, however, I wouldn't use the Dremel. Once completed you may want to use some cork seal by U-40. It will seal your cork and it will make it much easier to keep clean. Are any of the above follows rod crafters? What I would like to do is to create a spreadsheet listing your name, location, and expertise down. For example, bass fisherman, saltwater guy, freshwater guy, flyfisherman, whatever, so I may guide people who are having trouble with something to someone who may help them out. So if you haven't put your location down on your profile sheet, please do so and then give me some idea what your expertise might be.
