I typically fish in a different neighborhood for each species, so I get around. I have one for gar, one for carp (my gar hood is militantly opposed to non-residents fishing there because that lake is full of footballs, but they let me fish because I take their trash), one for bass, catfish, etc. I run into other fishermen all the time, and aside from a small kid wanting to keep their first fish that's too small, I haven't seen much of anything illegal beyond putting tilapia back, which I admittedly do occasionally.

The first trout stocking happened the day before Thanksgiving, so I've been chasing them almost exclusively at the public park lake. I've been 5 or 6 times since, for only an hour or 2 each time, but EVERY time, I've seen SOMETHING illegal. It's a highly pressured pond, not bigger than 2 acres, and it's pretty standard for there to be 3-5 other guys fishing, mostly for catfish. People fish with 3 or 4 rods (2 rod limit), take more than the limit, and today I saw 2 guys using a casting net. On top of all that, I've spent at least 15 minutes cleaning up trash/discarded line 20 feet from trashcans all but one time, and that's because I was last to leave in the evening and the first there in morning, as I felt like soaking a line before work.

Would you make the call? Given how many disregard regulations and how freely they discuss their violations, I tend to doubt whether or not many of these guys are even licensed.

Several of them are clearly feeding their families, which is where I pause.

What say you?

We had a pretty similar situation around here. Lots of people came in big groups. They made the drive out to my normal fishing hole and would bring vans packed full of people. They would have anywhere from 30-50 people at once. They had to drive an extra 30 minutes to get down here and would pass a lot of excellent fishing spots to get to this area. They would cast across your line and pull you in repeatedly and act like they didn't do it on purpose knowing they were doing it to make you mad enough to leave. They left trash and everything on the banks. Where I had to draw the line was when I pulled up for 3 weeks in a row and someone had left massive stripers laying at the top of the rocks. So us locals started talking about these people coming down to our area and the fishing holes they had to pass to get here. Why weren't they going to those places? Because f&g would patrol those places. So I finally broke down and had a talk with a game warden I saw on a regular basis. 3 moved into our area and started patrolling. No more problems. He had told me that he knew all of us locals that came out to that area and he knew we did things mostly by the books so he didn't feel the need to patrol. Then when he found out there was a problem it was taken care of. So the point I'm making is that if you want to keep a good fishing hole fishable, sometimes you gotta get that problem stopped as soon as it starts. F&g might not know there's a problem because good folks like yourself come in and clean up after those who don't need to be fishing. Hope you find the answers your looking for, and best of luck with your situation

When I went to Galveston this weekend with my wife at a pay to get in park $15 Seawolf Park. She asked me the question why are people keeping those fish that are only 4 to 6 in Long? Can't post what I said. I had to explain to her that those fish we're legal to keep at any size and with no limit. They were filling five gallon buckets with them. They were porgies and sand trout and whatever else? It is a real disgrace to see this! This is why there is regulations made and more need to be made. I do not know what they do with these fish? What can you do with these fish? Does someone know? I did ask someone and he said restaurant soup. I think that is the only two words of English he knew.

Hang 'em. Hang 'em high!
Seriously, turn them in. They're hurting the fish population and the fishermen. The majority of us obey the rules and those who don't should be made to pay for not obeying.

Well,,,,,,,,,,,,, I believe you found out what you should do from the general populace but to do it, it is easier said than done. I would be careful, you are talking about a lot of people and some will get pi$$ed. I think I would call the CO, schedule an appointment with him/her, and tell him/her exactly what is happening and your thoughts on the matter. It could be that this is what they expect and could care less about the situation. Chances are, they are very much aware of what is going on, and chances are they have had other complaints about it. I won’t buy all of that. I’ve worked with MN Conservation Officers and they are hell on wheels when it comes to this kind of abuse.

In many jurisdictions the word forgive has been removed from the game and fish dictionary. These are slam dunk cases and they will do both when they get a shot. Make the call. Lay back and watch the show.

I currently work for the MN. DNR during the Spring/Summer/Fall months from April 15th until Nov. 15th and I'm currently on the Houston Country Sheriff's Posse. Trust me! Tread lightly!

Be sure and let the professionals deal with violations. They are trained and have backup, observe, step back and let them protect the environment! Understand cleaning up others trash and wondering if folks have enough to eat. But pigs at the trough. NO!

Call the Warden or your state DNR. Rules and Regs are for everyone and made to protect our natural resources.

Having been in enforcement my advice is to discreetly take pictures of the violation and of the license plate of the vehicle they came and left in. Call enforcement in your area and let them take care of it. We always acted on any rules complaint. And with pictures and a license plate we could go directly to the violators. Do Not confront the people as it more often than not unfortunately becomes a much bigger problem very quickly.
