The smile says it all tho. Great catch A!

Sorry to disappoint, but that's not me or my catch; someone mentioned a 5-lb. sunfish earlier and I just wanted everyone here to see what he was referring to !
This beast was caught at Lake Havasu on the Colorado River; another one just a few ounces smaller was caught less than a month later ! We have an invasion of quagga mussles in that area; apparently the bass and sunfish
(and probably the 'cats'also) have been gorging themselves on them, as some fairly large sunnies and bass have been caught in that area since the invasion ! Now, do I wish it was me hauling in these
monsters ? HELL, YEAH !

If I caught a 5lb. one on the tackle I use it would wear the both of us out.

And I would have it mounted and be so proud.

Even better if one of my grandchildren caught it.

How old are your grand-kids,
Oz ? If they're little tykes, that 'sunny' could be hauling THEM
in, instead ! Being the 'great'
grand-dad that you are , I'm sure you're well aware that you REALLY need to be attentive and alert with young ones anywhere on or near the water; a crisis could occur at any time and it only takes a split-second for it to happen ! Be safe, buddy, for you and your family !

True story.

A lot of years ago, 10 or more, I took my ex's daughter fishing with me one night...catfishing the Ausable rivermouth. She was maybe 5yrs old. I made her wear a life jacket because the pier at the mouth is quite high off the water. I'd cast her princess pole (lined with some pretty heavy line just in case) and hand it to her, told her "just hold and wait, when u feel a pull, pull back and start reeling." I stood right beside her with my hand at the ready in case disaster tried us. All of a sudden, she was squealing and getting pulled strait to the edge... I snapped my hand out and grabbed the back of her life jacket and tried to get the pole out of her hands, not happening lol.. she hauled in a BEAST of a sheephead, about 8lbs if I remember correctly. She almost got pulled into the drink though if I didn't think quickly enough... so, good point!

[quote=DennyLongley]Holy cow... quick question tho, is a redear a specific type of fish? Or is it just a name for super big crappie and bluegill ?

Hi, Dennis ! For the record, there are at least a dozen types of sunfish, not even counting the bass family members, who are also related ! Here's a list of the most common ones in the U.S.; I may have missed one or two of the less common ones !
1/Bluegills - 2/longear sunfish
3/redear sunfish - 4/redspotted
5/spotted - 6/green sunfish
7/ redbreast sunfish - 8/warmouth
Also in the family are the white and black crappie ! There are also about a dozen types of bass - many are mostly unheard of in areas other than their own
waters !

Holy crappie..

Thanks for the info! I didnt realize there were so many types.. I've caught most of them, well from what I saw on google anyhow. I just labelled them bluegills, sunfish, or hybrids.. i called the spotted ones that are pretty, green and iridescent blues, hybrids, along with the red breasted I think.. I called them hybrid too.. so again thank you for the info.

One question tho.. is redear pronounced "re-dear" or "red ear"??

Love to get in on some of that action.

Hi, Oz ! Don't know your personal situation, but if you were really interested in trying your luck out here, you could contact Steve Sena, who's also on this forum;
I'm sure he'd be happy to help
you ! The Colorado river, depending on which stretch
you're fishing, has some trophy-
sized trout, bass (Lm, Sm & Stripers), sunnies, crappie, channels and flatheads ! Some real trophy/state record fish have been caught on the Colorado !
If you drove, it would be roughly
20 hours, door-to-door; fly in to Las Vegas and it's roughly 3-1/4
to 3-1/2 hr. flight, followed by a
2-hr. drive south to the Mohave Valley ! He knows the river well, has a boat and has fished it up and down for years ! Could be a 'bucket list' trip !

I know a couple of kids 35 and 40 or so that moved their young families to Az.

I do know they both love to fish I was gonna recommend them if they are close.

Now I have to get ahold of their parents and find out exactly where they are.

Thank BA.

And if I ever drag my behind that direction.

After reading post on this MB my bucket list has Grown.

If you're referring to that sunfish, I don't know ! Do quagga mussles
contain steroids ? Good question, though, even if you may be yankin' somebody's chain !
