What’s your all around favorite line? Are you a Rio guy or a SA guy? What lines from the company?

Looking to figure out what line I want for my christmas outfit, trout rod.

I grew up on Cortland, switched to Rio about 25 years ago, and these days I run a mix of SA and Rio and the odd Airflo. So long as you're getting a line that's matched to your fishing place and style - like being sure to get a tropical line if you'll be fishing somewhere hot, say, and not getting a streamer head if you're going to be mostly throwing dry flies - then I'm not sure you can go wrong with either Rio or SA these days.

One thing to watch is whether or not it's weighted a half-size heavy. For instance, the SA Amplitude MPX in a WF5 is actually more of a WF5.5, which might be great for a faster rod, whereas their Amplitude Trout is more like an old-school WF5 taper suited to more of a medium action rod. If you can, take your rod to a shop and see if they'll let you try both of those lines - see which your rod and stroke seems to prefer.

The airflo Superflo river and stream and Scientific Anglers VPT are hands down my two favorites on my 9' 5wt for trout. They're delicate when needed, you can throw smaller streamers with them, and it tight spaces they roll cast and spey cast like a dream. Easily the most versatile lines made as long as you aren't trying to throw lead-eyed 5-inch streamers.

Since I tend to fish smaller waters and almost always fish small dries, I fish with a Rio double taper line. I get a more delicate cast and get twice the life out of it then I would from a weight forward line.

I have fished Rio and SA. I started using Orvis Hydros after a deal last year, and I have used it on all rods since. Of course I think SA makes their lines. I just dont know what the equivalent is in SA, so I just keep with Orvis.

Floats well, shoots well. No memory issues. I am happy with it.

One I have always wanted to try was that Wulff Triangle Taper for my bamboo rod. If I ever get around to it.

I like the Orvis hydros WF trout line. I have that on my 5wt. I also have the Orvis hydro steelhead/salmon on my 8wt.

I use this line because every year it goes on sale for $29-39 during Christmas sales. It’s good $79-99 line which I generally can’t afford since my 2 year old takes up all my income. Check out the sale, it’s still on I think.

I have sa, rio, airflo, and orvis. I like them all. Do you have friends or a fly shop who will let you demo some lines?

Monic has several new lines that work very well.Their new Icicle line for cold water is the best I have ever used.
They also have a new dry fly line for a more delicate presentation that I like as well as any fly line I have ever used.
Give them a try for yourselves.
