looking for a surf rod and reel.
I want to get my own surf rod and reel.
Lets say 200 dollar budget. (Some wiggle room)
What should I be looking at?
Also, if length matters. Looking for something around 12foot. (I commonly fish with 11+ foot freshwater rods and absolutely love the catapult effect you get with them. Hooksets ARE more difficult so I'm aware of the length being a different challenge

Bass pro currently has the offshore angler ocean master on sale for cyber monday. Never used one but heard good things. I have the power stick (8ft) and I love it, just ordered an ocean master for surf fishing!

I'll give it a look over. Sounds right to me.
For throwing live bait from sand bars.. (And beaches) what would you recommend? I often kayak to the bars or wade out.

Length will depend on what you are throwing and the typical conditions you will face. Bait vs. plugs, do you need to cast a good distance to get over breaking waves, etc. A 10 ft. rod is suitable for most conditions and will not wear you out as quickly as a longer rod. Also be conscious of reel size and weight. Bait fishing, you can go heavier and bigger, but if you are plugging - you have to think of fatigue. A 5000 size series is a good reel for both applications.

Okuma, 8ā6ā, Salmon series rod. 2500-3000 Shimano Sedona spinning reel. Perfect for halibut, surf perch, striped bass, corbina, and pretty much all inshore species under 20 pounds. That said, I am a light tackle guy. Not a fan of 11ā rods w 5000 reels unless Iām surf fishing in Mexico for truly big game fish...šš¼āāļøš£
Penn spin fisher reel with 40 lb braid with with penn 10 foot graphite rod - have 2 of them - great all around combo for surf fishing for stripers, blues & fluke - bait or lures.
If you're throwing live bait you might want to consider a live liner feature. The Penn Fierce II has it for right around 70 bucks. Pair that with the rod of your choice, pretty nice for surf.

Penn makes a very good Penn Battle combo in that price range. I have the nine foot rod with the Battle 4000.
Check out the Alvey site. I have a small Alvey. Casts a good distance and doesn't have problems if it gets wet
