In the cold weather I put some vaseline on the rod guide to prevent freezing but now that I am switching to a baitcasting rod I am wondering if the reel will get damaged (Never had a problem doing this with my spinning reel but I know that casting reels are more complex)

Vaseline is God's gift to the human race. Good for many applications.
Mix some graphite or black pepper with it and put a small amount in the level wind worm gear to lube. Prolongs it’s performance.
Vaseline acts as the carrier for the powered Graphic. My Dad taught me this for the whel bearings on my bikes growing up. I passed that tip on t a couple kids with skateboards and they later told me it was cheaper and better than the grease they had been buying "Just for Skateboards". The graphite is the real lubricate, the Vaseline is just the carrier. Powdered Grapic can be bought at a lot of Auto Parts stores. Doesn't take much to mix with the Graphic.

I use powdered graphite to lubricate some locks before I pick them. Good stuff.
