Humminbird Helix G2N - outdated?

The Helix 12 G2N SI with mega is selling for $1500 but after looking into them seems humminbird does not even sell them anymore. Is there any large negatives as to why I should get a G3 instead?

I can almost get 2 12s for the same price as 1 G3 version. I'm going from a small unit that came with my Bass Tracker so anything like this will be an improvement just don't want it to be completely unsupported next year if that makes sense. Seems like the G3N mainly added SI+ for clearer images and longer SI range on mega.

Any insights would be appreciated.

If you aren't fishing 50+ft and needing si then you'll be fine on g2ns. G3s have longer imaging and the high wide features. All depends If you really need the features. I still run gen 1 9s cause I don't tournament fish heavily and I've learned my units well. Plenty of buddies with megas and they're great but I don't see the need for some other features for how I fish.

Exactly this. If you can get a good deal on one like you say, go for it. The mapping chips will still work with it for the next few years at least anyways.

Will you want to run mega 360 at some point in time? You have to have a G3 unit if you want be able to use mega 360. The mega 360 plugs into the sonar port on a G3 Helix (or G2 solix) as a SI source, and then can be networked to other units. The regular (old) 360 is an ethernet accessory and will work with the G2N units.

That being said, the G2N units are fantastic. If the price is right, go for it.

Would like the 360 eventually but need a console and bow unit first. Would putting the G2 on the console then adding a G3 for the 360 up front be an option?

Is 1500 for the G2N 12 SI a "good deal"?

I think it's a good price on the unit. That's what I paid for my helix 10 last year.

You could put a G3N unit at the bow. Or you could put a G2N there add another G3N unit somewhere if you end up with a mega 360. Just make sure the unit has an "N" in the name. A helix 7 G3N is networkable, but a helix 7 G3 is not.

I know Humminbird has had a lot of problems with the motherboard on the gen 2. More than the gen 1. I don’t see the problem on the gen 3. I would shy away from gen 2. I understand the price difference, I would choose gen 1 over gen2 though.

The real problem is that no matter what you buy it will be surpassed by something new either in ability or some new idea. Buy what you want with thinking of what your future fishing venture will be. Just fun buddy fishing or some tournaments or are you going full blown tournament. If your headed in to tournament world you need to be able to add on or connect or something.
