Ocean Kayak Length

What length is the recommended minimum for a kayak to go ocean fishing? I'm looking into a 10ft with a pretty wide stance but I'm worried if I need a longer kayak but afraid of losing width and stability at the same time.

Id go longer if I were you. But I suppose it's what you're comfortable with

I'd say around 12 feet. 10 feet is for rivers or lakes, but it could work in the ocean...its just not the best for it.

Are you gonna be in the bays/flats? Are you gonna be offshore?

As long as you're sitting, narrow kayaks are absolutely stable enough for fishing, and the speed and paddling efficiency benefit is undeniable.

My wife just tried my 25" wide kaskazi having barely ever kayaked, and didn't even have a wobble out on the lake. She ended up preferring that kayak over my 33" wide viking gt (which has downturned chines aka triple-hull) because it was so easy to paddle, so i ended up having to slog home in the slow kayak. :p

I've been chasing pelagics in yaks for a few seasons now, and would recommend 12' as a bare minimum, and a rudder highly advisable. Not having to break your paddling rhythm to maintain course takes a big phydical load off.

A 10ft kayak would work inshore in bays and so forth, but I wouldn't try to take one offshore. You need at least a 12ft kayak for that.

I have a tandem 13'6" and it does well, carries gear and is stable in the ocean. good luck & make sure your drag is set correctly, I've seen the man in the gray suit flip people over when he decided to go for a stroll!!

I had a 10 ft wide yak and sold it after just one season because it was hard to keep on a straight course. A 14 to 16 ft yak would be best for paddling thru waves.

I'd go bigger. My Hobie Revo13 cuts thru waves like a knife, but you can't stand in it. The wider the yak, the more sway you will have in the ocean.
