Traveling with 8'+ Rods

Ever since ive fallen in love with Pelagic Fishing out west in California, all I can think about is flying back out and getting back into the madness. Im a serious east coast fishermen and own a fair amount of tackle that is ideal for fishing most of the inshore pelagics out west. My question is, I am currently in the process of investing into a decent iron/flyline rod for next summer. How would I be able to bring that rod out west from NY? I have been looking into high end rod cases to fly most of my two piece and 7'6 rods, but I have plenty of one piece surf rods, and eventually an 8'6 iron rod that I need to bring to cali.

Big ass bit of pvc pipe with some padding and post it ahead of your trip.

I regularly freight my rods across the country when I go home to fish with my brother.

What size rods do you usually ship? And what do you use to pad and close the sides?

Everything from 5’6 jig sticks to 7’6 2 piece stickbait rods. If they are two piece I’ll leave them together. Track down some rod sleeves.. a lot of rods come with them already and if not most tackle shops will have dozens laying around. They will protect the rods in the tube. Bubble wrap in the end with the tips works best. If the rods are in a rod sleeve and then bubble wrap in the end they will be fine. They won’t vibrate enough in the tube to cause any damage, and the bubble wrap will stop them sliding to one end and popping a tip.

Having said that, I now don’t take my rods with me. I just bought a few that I keep at my brothers and only bring my reels and lures.

If you’re only going to use the popping combo on the west coast, you might as well leave the rod there. (if you can.)

i have the plano tackle tube that extends up to 9 feet i think. I use it for car travel with my 7'6 one piece rods and its awesome. i havent done air travel with it though. I have a few 3 piece rods I bring when i fly (they can fit in a suitcase inside a rod tube)

If possible ship to location , a lot easier if it’s a longer rod ! Cost of shipping today on oversized packages is costly if you use Fed Ex or UPS ! Sometimes you can find an LCL carrier that will take longer but be a lot cheaper . Like was said , if you go a lot leave it there , that’s easiest by far !!

I use a 6-inch diameter piece of PVC with end caps when traveling with my 10-foot steelhead rods. The bubble wrap at each end is a great idea to protect the tips. I also put my rods in sleeves. You can buy the PVC and the caps at any hardware store and cut it to the size you need

PVC is the way to go...you get a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction knowing you built it the right way, and it’s cheap to boot...if you really want to get fancy, put on a screw on end cap, and use closed cell sponge for padding....
