Welcome Bobby. I live over in Lincoln. I've fished the delta a few times. Used to fish the Feather River for stripers, catfish, smallmouth and shad in the spring. Shad are a blast on a 3 wt. I've only fished the Sac up by Redding.

Hi Bobby I grew up fishing and learning the Delta and your best bet for catch stripers is the spring run with lures up in Sherman lake and big break in Oakley. For the spring run a sure bet is if you find birds feeding on the water you can simply cast a pencil proper lure out and up to the flock but not into it as you will spook the birds and walk the lure back to your boat and hold on to your rod. That fall run can be good to in the first 2 weeks or the run and when bait fishing use a 8/0 single hook and ditch all those small hooks that you have. A 4/0 hook might seem big to most fishermen on the Delta and you might catch Strippers but most of them will be those pesky bait stealers. The best thing about a large 8/0 hook is that those small pesky small fish cannot steal your bait on the fly and you still catch just as many fish only thay are big fish. Both the Sturgeon fishing and the stripers can be a bit slow in the cold and bait is your best bet for the cold Delta water. Try fishing bullheads with those twin hook setup with the long steal rod and thrieded it into the bullhead from the head first with the connection to the line coming out the tail end and with those twin hooks facing ( down ) like into the mud. The reason for the hooks needing to be at the head of the bullhead is because both stripers and sturgeon take in the bait head first be it shad or any other bait. When fishing with bullheads and globies the fishing is slow and you need to use the wait and wait method and not the rebait every 10 minutes and both stripers and sturgeon love them and you will catch bigger fish to. Another things about stripers and a larger hook is that those large stripers are not hook shy and you never need to do any hook surgery as they cannot swallow the hook like candy and there is no ripping the hook out. The bait hook that I used for the bullheads looks like is attached below and the 8/0 hook is for bait fishing shad and it it a strait shank hook so once again ditch those small hook.

Good morning to all . Well boys I live in dairyville not far from Redding.and this year for the striped bass was a record year for me I got less time on the water and way bigger fish I partly believe this to be from the water temperatures and I just changed my style of fishing a little I usually throw a lot of swimbaits this year I incurred up above the holes and drop back big pieces of sardine all the way to the tip of the drop off of the whole I landed a 34 pounder and several 15 pounders doing this it's slower fishing then bouncing snack from snack throwing swimbaits but it seemed to me like I got the big ones I was after and not only did I get those stripers I ended up having to sturgeons grab my bait this year got them up seeing what they were before I cut the line so what I'm finding is striper fishing is all about patience or knowing the spots to be patient in I should say so do your homework and know your water and the fish will come.

You guys making me want to get out on the river. There's a place up on the Sacramento outside of Yuba City about 20 miles or so, called Lovey's Landing in Meridian. Terrific bar and restaurant and a great place to sit and tell lies. The striper fishing in February and March is not bad either. Come on spring.
