Ultra-Light Gear

Hey all, Just looking for some recommendations on some high quality ultra light rods. I’ve bought a Berkeley Cherry Black (whatever their little red rod with the Abu Black on it is) and a Quantum xtra light, but I broke both of them with less than a week of fishing. This Quantum one I just broke on my third hookset!!

Just looking for a higher quality ultralight that can handle... fishing. I’d already caught a five younder on the quantum so at least I got my monies worth but damn.

I'm having trouble thinking of some top tier brands that offer ultralight, at least in the bass world. Dobyns has a Light in the Champion Extreme line, and it can handle pretty light baits. St Croix might have one, too. I'm sure they exist, just having trouble thinking what brands might have them. If you are okay with light, the Champion Extreme line is one of the best rods available, bar none, period.

Are you treating the rod like an ultralight while you fish? Breaking it on a hookset makes it sound like you are horsing fish like it's a MH or H instead of working within the limits of the rod. The nicest ultralight you can buy will still break if abused.

I'm like Oct4ne, as well.....are ya sure ya want ultralight ? Never have I, nor have I ever known of anyone breaking a rod with the hook-set. I would also ask,.. what line strength are you using. You are aware aren't you, that the term "ultralight" extends to the line, as well ? Had your line been commensurate with the rod/reel specs (usually nothing over 8 lb, usually 4 or 6lb...mono or fluro, rarely braid) or some amount of drag properly set, no way is the rod gonna be the weak link. Embrace the ultralight style of fishing for the finesse and proof of prowess, not to seek lunkers, nor fish as if.

If you want unbreakable, you might try an ugly stick, though not sure how light they go, my two are my catfishing rods, hardly my light gear. Good luck with your transition and....be nice to your rods,now..... ! LOL !

I had a 6 St. Croix med/light baitcasting rod with the small silver Shamano baitcasting reel with 8 pd. Poly-co japinesse line, then fluro for 30 years. BEST rod I ever had. One of my son's still has it, that make's it 40 years. or More ?

I've used an ultra light for over 50 years now. Same reel but on my second rod now. The first is a Browning with a short section of rod and reel seat separate from the main rod. It was too long for back packing so I built my second rod in 1982. I still use it (4 piece - 5'). The reel is a Quick Micro lite. Still works great.

I always use 4 lb. line. My whole rod and reel seat bend under a not too big fish. It's fun.

If you break the rod you're doing something wrong. Don't set it down where you or someone else might step on it and beware of car doors.

Good luck

I have 2 UL set-ups. Both have a Quantum Q-ray reels. One rod is a 5'6" Quantum Teton with 6 lb line on the reel. The other is a 4'8" Ugly Stick with 4 lb line. The Quantum rod is 20 years old and is my "truck rod" that's always in the tool box of my truck and has caught everything from tiny bluegills to a 6 lb blue cat without breaking.
