I really don’t know anything about the reel. I’d like to give it a thorough cleaning and put it back into use next season. Anyone a Penn 209 user??

Check out Mystic Reel Parts, they stock everything Penn you could need and also provide schematics.

I have a strangely similar story to you....my advice is do not take it apart unless you know what you’re doing

The 209 is a very simple reel and a great candidate for one to get their feet wet in reel repair. Most conventional and baitcast reels have the same basic design and a 209 will help familiarize. Here's the schematic you need https://www.mikesreelrepair.com/content/schematics/Penn_209M_LEVEL_WIND_REV_10_Schematic.pdf

Take pics along the way as you go, and place the parts in order as you take them off. Reverse that order when it goes back together.

That helps tremendously, I appreciate it! Ended up finding two of these. Plus a few older ones. I feel like I have to get these cleaned and primed now for next season. That schematic is an incredible help.

One thing to watch on the Penns are the bearing cups. If they saw a lot of saltwater it can be a challenge removing the bearings. If you find a salt encrusted bearing, soak it in vinegar for a good 20 minutes, rinse, then spray with WD40 and soak another 20. Afterward, you can tap it out with a mallet and drift punch. A machinist's block comes in handy for such a task, they usually run less than $20 on Amazon.

When I was 9 I took my Dad's old Penn completely apart. I was not allowed to go fishing until I put it back together properly. It took 1 year.lol Now fast forward 55 years later I can put Penn Reels back together in my sleep. Every single time that I go fishing with my Penn Reels I take them all completely apart and clean them for next year. I own 13 Penn Reels of different models. My Dad had passed away when I was 4 so don't remember much about him except that he loved to fish with me. I still have that 64 year old Penn that works great. I still use it. Oh..I get my spare parts that were made in USA not new stuff made in China at garage sales. I recommend that you cut off old fishing line from reel then get tight fitting container full of kerosene and soak the reel for a month or more then completely dry off before taking apart to repair. You see if that salt corrosion or other minerals are not out when you take apart it could cause you to accidentally break other parts when removing to clean. You should get detail schematics from Penn or over internet while reel is marinating. You should try not to use any plastic replacement parts when ever possible. They just don't hold up with large fish over 100 lbs. Good Luck and Good 🐟

My dad had one, except it was red in color. He used that reel from when I was a lad up until about fifteen years ago, it got a good bird nest and he violently removed the reel from the roof cut the line or tore it into threw the reel as far as he could into a running River. He never spoke of that reel again and I know he had it some 40+ years. I do wish I had it now.

I have one that I bought in 1974. It has been a very good reel. I’ve caught a lot of fish with it. Freshwater has mostly been for big catfish, and has been used mostly at the NC coast. I love mine. It’s just a good all around reel that holds a fair amount of line.

I just ordered a Penn 209 tonight. I think it's gonna be fun to use. I'm looking forward to it anyway. Now I've got to buy a pole for it. I'm thinking an 8' composite heavy fast. Use em for blues and flat heads.
