I’m looking to get new line for this upcoming season and I was wondering what type of line I should use for a baitcaster and a spinning rod 1. The baitcaster is gonna be used for hard body baits and weighted rigs , I’m looking to run 15lb + should I use braid or mono?

I don’t fish spinning stuff. For the baitcaster im a fan of full braid and a short top shot of whatever you want. All my bass reels have 40 or 50lb braid. And top shot I vary between 10-50lb mono depending on what I’m doing.

You know what’s the lightest lure you throw on it is?

Lightest I really ever throw is 1/4oz head with small 3 inch swimbaits and I never have any issues casting that.

Yep. Lightest I'll go with baitcasters 1/4oz.

If you are fishing moving baits I would recommend using mono as it will provide some stretch and won't rip the lure out of their mouths. I'm not a fan of using leaders so I typically fish straight lines. Bottom baits / moving baits I use Fluoro, top water is mono, and braid for frogging. If you are going to run braid on the baitcaster I would recommend 40lb at least. Anything less and you will have issues with birds nests.

Run braid on that baitcaster man. 30lb at least. The stuff just seems to work better in a baitcaster. Zero memory. I've conditioned mono/floro, soaked in water overnight to no avail. Braid works best in those. I say heavier braid because it's easier to work with.

I like straight braid, with a 10-15lb leader. Just make sure, if you use braid, tie a backing or wrap a layer or 2 of electrical tape around the spool. I like to use electric tape, it's worked for me and I never have slips, and it's easier than tying a backing

What are you wanting to do with the spin setup?

When looking at braid, look at diameter instead of breaking strength. Larger diameter line is easier to handle than smaller diameter on baitcast reels. 30lb braid is roughly equal to 8lb mono in diameter, 40lb/10lb, 50lb/12lb, 65lb/15lb, and so on. On low profile reels I like to use 30lb or 40lb braid and round reels I like 40lb through 65lb.

Throw the spinning gear in the trash, 1 or 2 Braid set ups, 4 to 6 fluro, or 1 mono for topwater

I have both and often times I prefer the spinning over bait caster, especially for steelhead and large trout fishing from guide boats. Our guides only use bait casters for trolling or bass fishing.

With no more than that lure weight you would be safe with 16 to 20 lb. braid. Just make certain that you keep your retrieves tight or you risk the line coming off of the reel in a rat’s nest.
