Any suggestions for a rod to pair with the reel? Will be kayaking baits for sharks. Based gulf coast Florida

I was about to boast about the merits of my Shakespeare Excursion from Walmart, until I read “sharks”.

Penn prevail is supposed to be good. Smaller-medium sharks.

Do you need height to clear the bars/prevent bar cuts in FLA? IIRC, here in Texas, a lot of the beach sharkers still use fairly long rods, even if they are using big reels and yak’ing out their baits (not casting), just to get their line up as high as possible over the bars. Some also use extra long sand spikes, or even mount rod holders on the roof racks of their trucks. If you get something with a fairly slow action (bends deeply into the blank), you usually won’t be overly leveraged when you hook into something big.

Mount it on a baseball bat. That way you got something to beat that shark with once you get it in your kayak.
