Beginner rod for female
Hey guys, my girlfriend is wanting to start fly fishing and doesn’t have any equipment, I’m a beginner myself and not sure for equipment for her, I’m wondering what size or rod and other equipment would be good for her as a beginner!

Fly rods aren't gender specific. What species will she go for and what region? A 9' 5wt rig is the most often reccomended for trout. But, really she'd be better off taking a casting class and going to a local fly shop and trying a few rigs once she has an idea about casting. Orvis shops offer free fly fishing 101 classes and it usually comes with a discount code for a rod.

With that location and the possibility of several kinds of trout, grayling, steelhead, pike and bull and lake trout you may want to reconsider "his" and "hers" fly rods and just consider having 2 complimentary tools of different weights. Definitely head to the fly shop for reccomendations for the area.

For affordable and decent entry level quality, there's a $100 rod reel combo from Cabela's. No expert here, but if you buy everything separate I'd say spending a little more on the line is the best bang for your buck.

The hardest bit of kit she may struggle to find is a decent pair of waders. Most chest waders are designed straight/flat, my GF found that the pairs in her size didn't fit right at the hips and chest. She up'd the size but it's awfully baggy in the legs with the increased leg length.
She has opted for thigh waders but that limits her access to deeper waters sometimes. They do make female specific waders and would recommend taking a look at them, but they aren't the less expensive brands.

Magellan waders from academy sports has a good female fit wader. Got a pair for my short gf and they fit great. Only $60 too!

Orvis has an Encounter 9' 5 wt for $169. Can hardly beat Orvis for the price. Probably worth a look.
