Why do my reels jam up?

Hello everyone. I am just below an intermediate fisherman and I fish for a variety of fish like bass, speckled trout, redfish, flounder. I use most of my rods in saltwater and freshwater and this really aggravates me. I’ve lost 3 reels to use. What happens is I can’t turn the handle on the reel. But I can turn the whole bailand reel in. I always wash my poles good after fishing and store them inside. Could someone tell me how to fix/prevent this?

Good Mornin' Banks, I'm not sure if I understand the problem but maybe the line was wrapped too loosely on to the arbor when you put the line on. Does the arbor spin when you try to reel in?

Hey banks, do you have the same problem on an empty reel? Like fly says could be the way the line is wrapped. You also mention that you wash the poles. When is the last time you oiled them?

Oil...Lucas makes a great reel lubricant.

Simple reel maintenance wash, back drag off, lubricate should take care of the problem as long as it’s spooled correctly

Do you rinse the reels with fresh water? How often do you fish?
Sand gets inside reels. Take apart and clean every 7 days of use.
Or, win the LOTTO, buy 365 reels, and use one new one just once. ( LOL).

Take them apart, clean them. I use MARVEL MYSTERY OIL and denatured alcohol to clean all reels. The M.M.O Disolves dried oil and grease, the alcohol removes oil residue. Oil and grease all moving parts, dont over grease.

If the bail part of the reel turns easily it has to be something inside that needs lube. If the bail does not turn easily, take the line spool out and remove the small screw that secures the nut that holds the bail spool and loosen the nut 1/4 to 1/2 turn and replace the small screw.

I think I figured the problem. In the internal gears some a rubbing against each other. Thanks.
