I’ll be in Missoula for the 7 days. Any leads on where to look for fish? I have a 4wt Echo carbon and a Lamson Speedster in 5 wt. I also have an Echo carbon xl 5wt, but looking to buy another reel, backing and weighted line. I was told this is one the best places in the world to try it out

Thanks ahead for the tips!

Definitely a good setup. Probably won’t be as helpful as some of the other comments but I always call local shops or go in for reports. I’ve heard great things about the Missoulian fly shop and the Grizzly Hackle, Good luck!

Rock Creek has been very nice to me when I've fished it and is a real favorite. I'm not from around there, though, and I've never fished it this late in the year, so I'm not sure if it's open.

But there's no shortage of other good water around Missoula.

It can get cold there. Be ready for rod guide ice.

Eh, fishing around Missoula is ok during the shoulder season. Trout clam up a bit as the temps drop but you can still get into them.

Drive east down the Clark fork and look for spots. Fish Creek and Rock creek are within your area. Little Blackfoot levels are pretty damn low but there's 0 pressure right now.

Drive around, have fun. The Missoula area offers kind of a C+ fishing experience as far as Montana goes but that C+ is an easy A or B+ in a lot of other places.

Edit: Maybe wear an orange hat. End of season gotta-get-ones are willing to shoot at all kinds of things.

Or maybe the Bitterroot? We used to do well on the Bitterroot in winter. July too.....

Have used Grizzly Hackle before for guided float trips. They know the waters around there as well as anyone.

Go up to Flathead Lake ~75 miles north fish Blue Bay, Yellow Bay and Woods Bay. Big lake trout. Charters from Mo Fish.
