Paint to use on hull of a 14' fiberglass boat.
I bought a gamefisher 14' fiberglass boat and the hull was previously painted. But they painted it on the trailer and missed some spots. I was wondering what is the better epoxy paint to use. I own a sprayer and I painted for a living so brush and roller are no problem either. Won't be painting for awhile so I'm in no hurry . there are just so many paints out there I'm just not comfortable about picking one bc I've never done marine painting below water line before . any help on product would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time . Rob
This will be a good topic for a lot of us that cannot afford a new boat or just enjoy refurbishing an older boat. Any and all input good experience or bad experience will let us know why we will need to do certain things in the process. I'm redoing an 1998 stick steer boat I refer to lovingly as my junkyard dog. Slowly turning it in to what and how I fish. Just took two L shaped pieces of steel and added a bracket to the back making a step on the trailer so it will be easier to get out of it when loading the boat. I do things to it as I get the money but always working on it with new ideas or things that are necessary to be able to keep using it as I do the refurb. Thanks for the post.
Check with a body shop they should be able to tell you what you need good luck.
Several epoxy paints I have used in the past, Awlgrip of course is the most widely used can be quite expensive but on a 14 foot boat it won't break the bank . You can brush/ roller it on using a method of roll and tip but Awlgrip is best sprayed as long as you get the spray catalyst for it. Awlgrip has a great site for all the information. Or for best info I had found over the years is Jamestown Distributors they have their own brand and how to do video etc, Great Company and people.
https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/main.doI have done a lot of dry dock work over the years on all kinds of boats I hope this bit of info helps.
great lakes fishing, some of us add Tabasca sauce to the paint and shake well. maybe a shot glass per gallon. no living thing will want to cling to the hull.
Tobasco? I hope that's an attempt at being funny!!! Tobasco is mostly water and water and 2 part epoxy don't mix ! Please use everything from 1 manufacturer, from pre wash, to dewaxer, to thinner, and catalyst, If you need anti fouling, get it from the same ppl. Follow the directions exactly including time between coats. Yup , awlgrip is as good as it gets for protecting yer boat, and if you look at a repaint in those terms, it's not expensive if labor is your own time !!!!
Thank you for the info. I will be doing all the labor and prep. Riding everything from one place makes sense to me.

A boat is no more than a corvett in the material they are made out of. Talk to a car paint and body shop on what to use. They know more then we do.
I doubt if a car body shop knows as much as i do about boat paint.I worked for 20 years at Fairhaven Marina in Mass. I ended up running the prop shop ,and doing engine alignments, but for 8 years I did the Awl Grip painting on top sides. That said, Imron is a very good paint almost as good.
