Just move the boat closer to the target area. Problem solved.
The way it comes off reel and the line diameter of line that you are useing
Just a thought. You could troll or still fish from a boat with as light a tackle as you want on your BAIT caster.
1/4 oz lures tells me you're targeting smaller fish. Get yourself a good spinning reel. You'll love it. If afterwards you still want to cast 1/4 on lures with a baitcaster get yourself a low profile high quality Diawa or Shimano. The next thing will be a quality light action 7 ft rod & a spool of power pro 10lb test braid. You'll need a 1/4 oz weight for the end of your line. Now you've got the rig. Learn how every screw & knob effects the fall of your line when you press the release. Now start practice throwing 25 or 30 feet. Do that without a backlash at least 500 times. Now throw double the distance another 500 times. If it's a breezy day try throwing into the wind & crosswind. Practice, practice, practice. Practice is the key to using a baitcaster. You can't get too much practice. When you think I you're ready put on a real 1/4 oz lure & head to the lake. Remember, if you're throwing spinners they cast different than a solid body lure. Enjoy yourself. Baitcasters are fun.

Light lures work and cast quite well with light line, light reels, light rods. Baitcasting light lures or any light tackle takes(and in this order), 1) patience
2) practice 3) practice 4) patience. Anything less than a 1oz, personally, I like my spinning reels for distance casting. I try to match the lure weight with the line weight. For instance, if I’m needing longer casts instead of precision, with a 1/16oz lure, I use 2-4 lb line, if it’s a 1/8oz lure 2-6lb line, and a 1/4oz lure will get 2-8lb line. I fish for trout in a medium sized river mostly and longer casts can be achieved with wind or river current. I do use a bait caster occasionally but typically, my baitcasters are set up with 12lb line or heavier and I find that I rarely use anything lighter than an ounce baitcasting. Whatever you do, if it involves a baitcasting reel, your two best friends will be patience and practice.
Anything less than 3/8oz. will give you problems casting with a baitcaster.
Sorry, but that’s the way it is, no matter how good a reel you buy.
Don't torture yourself. Simply use a spinning outfit .
My opinion bait casters were a result of bass fishermen (and woman). Bass love big ugly tackle which drag the line off the reel also bass like cover such as weed beds logs rocks docks etc.bait casting reels no matter how high tech, are designed like a winch. In short for light tackle use a spin set up. When you eat steak use a knife and fork eat cereal use a spoon. Dig a hole use a shovel. Chop wood use an axe. Cast light tackle spin cast or fly pole. Nuff said?
Continue to fine tune. Adjust to allow lure to slowly drop to floor. I use 10# mono. with 1/8 oz bullet weight and 6" roboworms all the time with minimal problems. Probably casting about 20-25 yards. I don't have the best reels or poles either. Poles 6'6"-7' medium heavy rods.

I am cheep I guess. I use a couple of 12 foot graphite rods, one with a small Zebco spinning reel with 30# braid and the other with 50# spider wire braid on a new Garcia Black? Reel, $40 reel. Works great for me. I fish mostly for cats and bank fish mostly by myself. My wife goes with me some and when my daughter comes from FtWorth, Texas, 8 hours from here, she does a darn good job of wetting a hook too. The wife likes to felay the fish. I like to just gut and skin them. Bake or broil them in garlic and pepper, soaked with Genness Extra Stout.

I've got a little Ryobi casting reel on a pistol gripped light action rod that casts 1/4 oz easily. Reel is spooled with 6lb line. There are several vids on YouTube that might help you. You can buy special reels just for the ultralight stuff. I just got lucky when I bought the Ryobi. But then...I don't think of 1/4oz as UL but then you didn't specify UL.
Time to try fly casting.
Never a dull moment.
