love these recollections, guys. like most of you, the one that got away was my biggest almost caught, which was a lemon shark in captiva island, fl. just a couple years ago but dang neither me, or 2 of my sons, had our phones on us for a pic since we were dressed for the water, but at least they did see it once we got it on to the pier, before it wrapped around an adjacent pier. 30lb moss green powerpro braid held despite the incoming tide's current which was washing the fish past us once we got it even with the pier we were on. was on the bottom with 2oz weight to hold it on the bottom, using cut bat (cant recall, either ladyfish, hardhead catfish or some leftover cast-netted herring ('whitebait'), at about 11pm in July. Shimano 4000 bait runner (the $100 one, not the $500+ one) with 7' ugly stick rod. Circle hook. Fighting the fish was fun, heavy, and i making very little progress for around 20 mins, and as mentioned, with much struggle i was able to get him closer to our pier, and we could get a good look, must have been 5 feet long and who knows how many pounds, maybe 100lbs+. Anyway, in trying to get him a little closer, he ran to the adjacent pier maybe 10 feet away, which was in the same direction as the incoming tide, wrapped the pier piling and pop. You know the feeling: incredible disappointment in losing it, but a heady aura of satisfaction having actually seen it on the surface and having fought it for a while. Would have released him anyway but man, for want of a camera at that moment. Second one is prob the beach snook you can catch there in Sanibel and Captiva - various ways but with a gulp shrimp or a a red and white bucktail jig (like this: https://www.spro.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SBTJRW%2DALL). nope, im not an affiliate. you can cast straight out or at a 30 degree angle to the shore and surprisingly there are big mama snook there in the summer time, often mid afternoon. a lot of people like the early morning or cast in front of them when sight fishing but this one was just on the beach (upper right in attached pic), swimmers around, 4pm and bam. awesome fun. released, as all of these fish were. Pic: these are some of my personal bests, fwiw. (Most of you already know, but for newer fishers: upper left, Redfish (captiva/ sanibel); upper right, Snook (captiva/ sanibel); lower left, black drum (boca grande, fl); and Redfish (south coastal NC). May we all go 'catching' and not just go 'fishing', lol.
