Shoot around St James city and across Pine Island Sound to Blind Pass. They are coming through the pass and congregating around the bridge and docks.

It’s not the way they are cooked. To me they even feel a little soft when I fillet them and I always keep my fish in a live well or on ice until I fillet them. I will still eat them but I prefer perch or bluegill.

Welcome to the Forum, Mark, can you keep any fish from that area because of the red tide.

The only ones we can’t keep are redfish, specs ( speckled trout) and snook. Flounder are ok as long aslegal size. The only place I have caught them lately is south end of Gasparilla island. Boca Grande pass .

I agree that the Bluegill and Sunfish are pound for pound the toughest anywhere. But the Redfin Pickerel, may reign supreme in a pound for pound fight on Ultralight tackle. I'm a musky guy myself, but I wouldn't think the fight of a typical musky is tougher than a King Salmon. Great question and one that everyone has an opinion on, I'm sure.
What about White Bass? For it's size, is there anything harder to fight?

When the white bass are running and on the feed they are great gun to catch. Strong fighters and their initial hit about tears the rod from your hand. When I lived in Wi I used to have a few people that came up for the white bass run every spring. The best part is they are very good eating. I usually just take the back fillet down to the mud line and that makes some great eating.

Go ultralite and go after some of those 1-2 lb bluegill and sunfish. Lb for lb they are hard to beat.

I agree.....I have always found crappie a little on the soft side even when I catch them through the ice. I have always preferred bluegill, perch or walleye for that reason.

Plenty of them in the Ft Myers area but you will have to wait until March-April to catch them when they come into the bays from the gulf to spawn. Pretty much any of the passes around the docks and piers will be good fishing. I did very well at blind pass last spring and all around Gasparilla island was good. 3-5 ft of water and small or 1/2 shrimp worked very well. They bite constantly but are hard to hook. You got to be quick. Fun catching and good eating.

For me bluegill are hard to beat Then perch and last crappie. I wouldn’t pass up a good meal of any of them though.

The jumble is SQUIRREL ! The fish looks like 'smelt', a small fish species that run in large schools
in cold northern waters (fresh and salt) that are distantly related to salmon and trout; one of several favorite New England baits used for ice fishing ! Usually caught with dip nets !

Not a smelt. Used to catch smelt by the thousands on Lake Michigan in the spring. Good eating and great northern bait. Fish shown is an emerald shiner.

The Wi state record perch is 3 lb 4 oz but we are always happy with the 10 - 12 inch fish. Our bag limit is 25.

If it’s hooked in the lips, any leader will do. If it’s hooked deep, behind the back teeth it will cut you off if you are using 100 lb flouro. If you want to catch big northern pike, and keep them, always use a good wire leader.
A 20 lb wire leader will handle most any northern and a good brand won’t crinkle.

It is a yellow perch. I’m from Wisconsin and this is one of the fish we about lived on when I was a kid 70 years ago. One of the best eating fish ever, pan fried or deep fried. After all these years I still look forward to a meal of yellow perch. The nice thing about perch is that they readily bite in summer or through the ice. They are a first cousin to the walleye and sauger.
