Dear Angelfish,
Hi. My name is Timothy and I am a fishing junky. I was on Angle Lake listening to the peaceful sound of Seatac airport while fishing from 0700 to about 1100 today. Getting on the acreage of the lake is grand as it is one of the few places around the Seattle area where no one puts up a tent. The atmospheric B pressure was slowly going down while mine was ascending. So to relieve the anxiety, I figured I would graciously invite trout to come to dinner. The WDFW stocked that lake about 3 weeks back with about 3440.5 1/3rd pound fish burgers, so as I puttered around I found some fair size lunker's lurking beneath my boat with my Helex 5. They were holding position at 30 to 31 feet. Try as I might I could not get a strike or nibble. Since I threw every thing in; crank bates, spoons, jigs, salmon eggs I eventually figured it must be the way the boat was facing and if I reversed this I might get a strike! On my little Smokercraft the anchor slips through a fair-lead and over a pulley on the bow. I have been meaning to put a cleat on both sides of the stern so I could face the opposite direction but I was to busy last week watch YouTube fishing tutorials to fabricate them. I had the idea (brilliant, I will tell you!) that if I could just turn the boat around it might confuse the fish to move out as all three of them from the whole damn lake were now directly under the boat. Do you think this would have helped? I've enclosed a picture of the minnow I got last time I tried Angle Lake. Signed Frustrated Fisherman.

You might try using a small "wooly bugger" styled fly on your line with some appropriate sized split shot sinkers spaced about a foot away from the fly. Lower it down to be amongst the marks on your graph and give it a few twitches to make it come to life.

Black or brown can typically be good colors. If you stop into a fly shop they probably have some nifty variations on that pattern that might be worth a try too. They imitate a leech, and most trout know what to do when they see one!

Good luck!

By the way...nice bass there...so you are definitely doing something right!

Welcome to the Stage, Timothy, It could have been the way you were holding your mouth, but, then and again, all freshwater fish like crawlers, from the flyguy? Do more fishing and less YouTubing, you will catch more fish.

For stocked trout, Powerbait. They haven’t learned to eat natural food yet!!

Hey Fishyaker,
I've been using a sinking tip on my fly rod with assorted leach type streamers. Lead shot on that rig sounds like a great way to put a nick in my rod. I try to avoid it. Are you suggesting a spinning set up?

Graywulff,
This is an interesting comment. I will keep it in mind. It would strike me strange that they would go after that and not go after the salmon roe. But I do wonder how many weeks it generally takes them to adjust, where they will be more adventurism in their pallet?
To have that info would let me chart lakes after I receive stocking report. Although it seems to me that they would go for the power bait for the rest of there life. Or do you find it is only the newly released?
Thanks

They do take the powerbait for always but here in Colorado the stocked fish rarely survive a complete season. I have heard estimates of from 3 to 6 weeks before they learn to forage for other food. I’ve not done any personal observations in that regard.

That also is interesting. Do you make your own power bait?

Ah...so you were running with a fly rod. I did not realize that. "No", I would not use split shot on a fly rod rigging to troll...or even cast (especially a sink tip or full sink). I recall you mentioning that the trout were deep...at around 30'...so my comment was geared around using a spinning rod set up and almost "jigging" for them.

Speaking of vertical jigging, I suppose that could be a successful way to go after them too. Small grub tail styles, Gulp minnows, etc. I use a lot of specialty jigs for Winter ice fishing that might even be worth a try. There are a ton of variations and can usually be fished without any bait...just the hardware.

Somebody mentioned live bait, and from my experience, that rarely fails but sometimes I know that a fisherman is trying to target their quarry in a specific way so if you enjoy the fly rod approach I hope that it comes thru for you! Probably switching to some alternate fly patterns might work...especially minnow imitations...

I broke a custom-built G. Loomis, with a tiny 1/64 oz. bead on a Pink Squirrel. If you use it make sure you cast it correctly. It only takes one poor cast, and the next decent fish you catch, you will have a broken rod. I have also seen it happen with others. I would not use any sinkers. The fly will not flow naturally if you are fishing a stream.

wulff, ya might be surprised how quickly stocked trout respond to their natural desires. When we stock trout for our children's derby, the older children catch lots of 'em with small castmasters, pheobes, and mepps type inline spinners, and we usually stock about 7 or 8 days before the event. Live worms and crickets do well also.
Kinda surprised me, so I asked the fish guy what he feeds them, and he uses the exact same food as our State's DFW type authority. No shiners, worms, or any other natural foods in his tanks. . . ? ? ! .

Thanks nutz. I didn’t know. I was just going by what happens in the local lakes and stuff I’ve been told. I’m glad to know different.

That's the beauty of this site, to get info from each other without anyone ( well, almost anyone ) being a jerk about it. At least, I TRY not to be. I ask for guidance from time to time, and am pleased to get a friendly response. You folks rock.
