This is my first time on here and I’m new to Walleye fishing. I don’t have a boat so I can’t troll so I was wondering what you veteran walleye fishermen I tell me, as well as what bait they are biting around the Newport area. Thanks in advance

George-French Broad,
I can speak to my walleye shore fishing experience from New York State; though now a resident of San Diego County.
Spring time is prime when they may be more reachable from shore. Do not miss the Spring.
Casting distance is important. Have quality equipment and if possible a rod 6 1/2' or longer. I use 7'2." Added distance.
We only used a few lures and they were all effective.
The Heddon Sonar was killer. Tied on through the middle hole. This thing will cast a mile. Let it sink, maybe to the bottom and lift it up and just keep feeling the quite prominent vibration. Link attached here. I didn't recognize the current colors. We used to paint them fluorescent orange or chartreuse. https://www.fishusa.com/Heddon-Sonar-Flash-Blade-Baits/?sku=100528&gclid=CjwKCAjw5dqgBhBNEiwA7PryaAt8El5W__t_gBUSNJEt1CkQJntYVzj921RtcOFC0mRb2Bt4rH7CWBoCkFEQAvD_BwE#variant-selection.

Jigs. I recommend 3/8 oz from shore. Again, increased distance. You can use bucktails, marabous (my favorite) or simple jig head with just a chartreuse curly tail (my buddy's favorite). The bucktails and marabous also lend themselves to adding a trailer. I remember one day, fishing alone, walking the reservoir shore carrying black, yellow and white marabous. I went through most all of them as any jig fisherman knows you're gonna lose a few, catching nothing. With only a couple jigs left, I added a live minnow to my least favorite white jig. First cast, from shore, 6# walleye.

Hope this adds somehow to your arsenal.

Thanks Sawheeler52, I think you may be steering me in the right direction. Every fisherman knows you take what someone tells you, add to/take away and find what they like. In north Georgia the trout seem to be crazy about red while here in the Smoky Mountains the seem to really go after pink. So I really appreciate your help it gives me a starting point. Happy Fishing!

Good to know. I’ve wanted to go to Watoga to trout fish but I hate thinking about that 2.5 hour drive from Sol Messer Mountain off old 15th road. Of course if I could fly… 20 minutes flat. 😊

You are certainly welcome.
Just a note if you chose Heddon Sonars:
1. If your rod, line and reel can handle it, we only used 1/2 oz Sonars and recommend about 10# test, nothing less than 8#.
2 . Note, never tie your line directly on the Sonar. The holes all have sharp edges which can cause a line break. Always use snaps (only, no swivels).
Here's some colors I recognize. https://www.fishusa.com/Heddon-Sonar-Blade-Baits/#variant-selection
Lemon Lime Shad & Perch (though this one looks more like a crawdad to me).
Don't forget the photos.
