My dad and I took a few casts at a backyard pond today and look what turned up! We were pretty surprised… Four fish in total hit in about 18” of water on soft plastics. Sunning themselves or getting ready to spawn?

Yeah buddy!! Beautiful catches! Like Andy Williams sang, albeit for a different reason, "It's the most wonderful time of the year..." My son and I count the days to pre-spawn the way we count the days to the start of college football season. It has begun here in the Delmarva as well.

Nice catching Steve and dad. If the little pond is warm enough they could be in prespawn, but I don't see any damage on their tails. When they start cleaning out spots for beds, usually you see some wear and tear on the bottom of their tails. Either way, that's a great pond you have there.

Some nice ones Steve. I'd say sunning themselves water still too cold to spawn 👍

KS.... the pigmentation can be a good clue to consider. The bass in your 1st pic is kind of light which could mean it is a prespawn fish that has left the deepest part of the pond (winter grounds) to come shallow. The bass in the second pic is dark indicating he's possibly been sunning in the shallows for several days now.

Hanging out out in shallow water where it is a bit warmer, particularly on sunny days.

I've seen bass that have moved to shallow water for the spawn but, water temps are in the mid to high 50's, sit in water so shallow their back is out of the water. The more common sight for the term is when you see a bass suspended just under the surface in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight is hard on the eyes of a bass. It's a good indicator as to how much they like "sunning" in cold water.
