I don’t even know what this bowl is for, other than to tease my imagination 😊. Do any of you know what it might have been used for?

I think it may be for watering cattle.

I think you are correct, Jack. That seems to be the consensus. Apparently there is a valve held closed by a spring at the top. The animal pushes on the plunger (the smiling face 😊) which lets the water in to keep the bowl full.

100% correct . Used them in dairy barns so the cows could drink when they came in to be milked. Couldn't use a bucket or trough, they would get " contaminated" or kicked over. Besides the cows were in stanchions in the barn.

Believe it or not, the cows knew which location to go to in the barn and always used the same slot.

It is a cow drinker used in a barn that the cows are housed all day and night

I think you are right. It won't be mounted as shown, but with the back side elevated and that middle item will hang relieving pressure on a valve that is up at the narrow top of the flapper. So all a animal has to do is nudge it and it will move opening the valve to let water come in and when cow or horse stops pressing the water will stop. Same principle as a dog waterer that I screw onto an outside faucet. It has a wiggler and You turn faucet on and when dog licks the wiggler, water will come out.

YeH, when I was kid I would hop on my bike and ride down to the dairy when the cows came in to be milked. Each cow had access to a water bowl in the barn.

Thanks for all the answers about what the bowl was for. But did anyone else but me see the accidental face smiling out of the bowl?😊
