Can any body recommend a reasonable fish finder to use with a kayak. I'm primarily interested in Kokanee salmon fishing.

I have been using a Garmin Striker 4 model for many years with great success. Small, simple and effective. They used to be a hundred dollars when introduced. The pricing has probably risen, but I also think they have added some features.

Depending on your kayak model/style, the transducer can be mounted thru a scupper hole or over the side edge.

The unit "head" can be mounted to any typical kayak set up with accessory capabilities, or a custom fabricated base mount can be created using marine "Starboard" material and some RAM brand mounting hardware.

Good luck on your selection!

Any model from Garmin, Lowrance or Hummingbird are good. It depends on the features you are looking for in a fish finder. What kayak do you fish from? Most of the newer models have a location for the transducer, like Lowrance on the newer Hobie kayak models. If you don't have one of those, you can mount the transducer inside against the hull or use a transducer arm, and hang it over the side. I've done all 3, since I started kayak fishing around 2006 :-)

I use a Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS Di G3 mounted on an Old Town PDL 106. It is still relatively new to me but so far so good. I found the screens on the smaller units to be too small for my aging eyes and I didn’t want one to large as space in a 10’ 6” yak can get limited. So a 5 inch screen seemed like a decent compromise. The old towns have a mounting bracket on the bottom of the hull for the transducer. I have not done much work with down imaging yet. Depending the amount of detail you need you may want to upgrade from the included Humminbird base maps . I use on lakes and with a kayak detailed navigational items are not really needed. The Humminbird base map has 10 foot contour lines.

I use a very basic Humminbird Piranha Max 4. My main interest is depth and vegetation.

The transponder is glued (plastic epoxy from TAP) to inside of the hull (HDPE).

Console base is mounted on a removable cross-member along with the rod and cup holders (pics on request). Battery is tucked next to the front seat (my 'yak is a double--would hang it under the cross-member on a single).

Hope this helps!

Wondering if any fish finder for a kayak has a rechargeable, self-contained battery?

I didn't see any when I was shopping for mine (Dec 2022).

YakAttack has a box for the battery and a transducer pole with mounting stand for your fish finder. Designed for kayaks, it’s all one complete unit. You can just get the transducer pole and fish finder bracket separately.
